Signed upper right, 'Graham' for Ellwood Graham (American, 1911-2007) and painted circa 1985; additionally signed, verso, and titled, 'View Study'.
This early California Modernist was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and attended the School of Fine Arts at Washington University. By the 1930's, Graham was living in California and working in the Federal Art Project as assistant to Gordon Grant. In this capacity, he designed and painted numerous murals in Federal and state buildings including the U.S. Post Office in Ventura. In 1937, he moved to Monterey and the home studio he built there was where he carried out various commissions, including for Senatorial offices in Washington DC and for John Steinbeck, a close personal friend, whose portrait he painted while the author was writing 'Sea of Cortez' (1940).
Graham served in the Navy during World War II and, afterwards, traveled between Monterey, the Caribbean (1952-1953), New Mexico, and Mexico (1954-1955) before becoming a resident of Pebble Beach in 1956. In 2000, he moved and spent his final years in Oregon. Graham exhibited widely and with success including at the Golden Gate International Exposition (1939), Art Institute of Chicago (1947), Corcoran Gallery (1947), Whitney Museum of Art (1951), San Francisco Art Association, Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art and the Carmel Art Association. Honored with 68 awards, Graham has received national and international acclaim as an abstract painter and colorist. His work can be found in numerous public collections including the Whitney Museum in New York City, the Art Institute of Chicago, the New Mexico Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum, the Santa Barbara Museum, the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Art Museum, the Oakland Museum, and the Brazilian Embassy in Washington.
Concerning his work, Graham said:
"I am a creative painter, the grist for the mill can come from anything at all - a love affair, a book, a poem, a conversation, anything. I like profound painting, although I'm not always capable of doing it, I want a painting to breathe; I like to orchestrate color, playing with the various tones to create an amalgam of color."

Artist, Designer, Painter, Poet, Sculptor Paul Showalter was born in Pasadena, California in 1940. Paul studied art and design at Pasadena City College, and later received a full scholarship to study at the renowned Chouinard Art Institute (now CalArts) and Otis Art Institute (now Otis-Parson) in Los Angeles, majoring in Advertising Design and Illustration. In 1966, Paul Showalter founded the Graphics and Communication Department at the new Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the first major art museum in Los Angeles, setting high standards of museum graphics throughout Southern California. At the 1970 World's Fair in Osaka, Japan, Paul was nominated for Best Animated Short Film for his film titled "The Moon Step." In 1974, Paul founded his own commercial graphic design firm, which specialized in the design of corporate identity programs, exhibition graphics, illustration, and print communications. Yuri Larin, also Yuriy Larin (1936–2014) is a Russian painter and graphic artist, a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR since 1977. Larin was born in Moscow to the family of a key Soviet political leader, Nikolay Bukharin, and Anna Larina. Following the arrests of his parents in 1938 and until 1946, he lived with his relatives, and following the arrest of his step-father, he was taken to an orphanage near Stalingrad. A hydraulic engineer by training, he worked at the construction of the Saratov Hydro-Electric Plant and at design institutions. In 1960, he began his studies at the department of drawing and painting of the Krupskaya People’s University of Arts, and then, from 1965 until 1970, he studied at the department of art design at the Moscow State Higher School of Arts and Industry (the former Stroganov Institution). His career as a professional artist began in the early 1970s. From 1970 until 1986, he taught at the Moscow 1905 Memorial Arts School. His letter to prof. Vittorio Strada sent in 1980 contained the first statement of his artistic method he would later dub the “concept of the limit state”. He quit teaching after a serious illness, when he lost the ability to use his right hand. He only worked with his left hand since 1986. He died and was buried in Moscow.

There she studied color with abstract artist John Ferren. A semester in Mexico in 1956 introduced her to bright patterns and colors, as well as the murals of River, Orozco, and Siqueiros.
From 1960 to 1968, Shapiro taught, got married, and raised kids. She still made time for art, taking painting classes with Richard Mayhew at the Brooklyn Museum. When she and her family moved to Great Neck in 1968, she founded Central Hall, the first women’s cooperative gallery in Long Island. Shapiro was also a contributor to Heresies, a feminist publication on art and politics.
Shapiro explores the intersections of pattern, geometry, nature, and craft in her work. As a child, knitting instilled an interest in how patterns develop from small individual components into larger compositions, as well as the importance of counting and learning numerical patterns. Her first abstract paintings in the 1970s were based on mathematical concepts, particularly the Fibonacci sequence that generates the Golden Mean. Early works included arrangements of ordered tally marks in bright colors or gridded diagrams of the Fibonacci sequence. Shapiro soon moved to patterns that allowed her to use color intuitively within a grid. She built up the surface of the paintings by squeezing paint directly from the tube to create a woven or knitted texture.
Shapiro was included in Pattern Painting at PS 1 in 1977, organized by noted curator John Perreault, which presented work by twenty-two artists working in the P&D Movement. The Everson Museum in Syracuse, NY organized a solo exhibition of her work in 1981. Her New York dealer was Andre Zarre.
Shapiro was a member of the Criss-Cross Artist Collective, founded in 1974. The group originated in Boulder, CO as artists interested in Systemic Pattern Painting or Structuralism. The group expanded into New York, California and Europe with its art journal Criss-Cross Art Communications, published from 1974 to 1981. They aimed to foster group work, interaction, integration, and synthesis. The artists were interested in geometry and pattern yet worked in a variety of art forms including text, sound, film, and dance. What connected the artists were: a capacity for visual organization; valuing the importance of pattern on perception and knowledge; and a methodology of system, ordering, and counting.
