Black form surfaces on red painterly ground / - The Double Origin of Painting -
Located in Berlin, DE
Jürgen Möbius (*1939 Großenhain), Black form surfaces on red painterly ground. Oil on hardboard, 50 x 60 cm, 51 x 61 cm (frame), signed "Möbius" and dated "[19]81". - Small paint chip in upper right corner, otherwise good condition. Gallery frame with slight signs of wear. - The Double Origin of Painting - About the artwork In the painting black, optically dominant forms can be seen, which in their arrangement at right angles to each other have a proto-architectural character. They are, so to speak, always already given original forms. At the same time, however, the forms are surfaces of color, and thus genuine painting. In order to make the painterly character of the painting clearly visible, Jürgen Möbius has applied red-toned strokes that have preserved the brushstroke. These are traces of an act of painting. The diagonal layers of red strokes merge into the upper white area, which oscillates between brushwork and homogeneous flatness, while the central white field, into which a black bar protrudes, has a decidedly planar character. The sharp contrast between the autonomous black surface forms, reminiscent of Kasimir Malevich, and the free brushstroke, which is not bound to any motif, creates an enormous pictorial tension, which is conveyed by the white, but at the same time is intensified by the virulent black-and-white contrast. In addition to the tense contrast of form and color, there is also a contrast between the dynamic of the brushstroke and the static of the black surface forms, whereby the diagonal alignment of these forms also gives the static a dynamic, while at the same time the layered brushstrokes have something static about them. Added to this structure of tension is the fact that the painting ground, the unprepared hardboard, is clearly present as such in the picture. In this way, it becomes clear once again that we are not dealing with an autonomous cosmos of form and color, as in Suprematism, but with a painting created by the artist's hand. With this work, Jürgen Möbius explores the possibilities of painting and thematizes painting in terms of its twofold origin, the trace of the guided brush and the painterly form, which gains its independence precisely by absorbing the brushstroke into itself. About the artist From 1959 to 1965 Jürgen Möbius studied painting at the University Institute for Art and Work Education in Mainz. He also studied philosophy and art history at the University of Mainz. Afterwards he worked as a freelance artist in Mainz. At first, Möbius created material reliefs and installations, then, around 1974, he turned increasingly to conceptual art and added cinematic means. During this phase he wrote the manifesto-like essay "Principles of Supranatural Landscape" (1979). From 1981 on, Möbius concentrated on painting and searched for artistic ways to "treat intellectual and sensual perception equally in the fusion of representational and abstract pictorial elements" (Wolfgang Zemter). He found inspiration on his study trips to Thailand and Sri Lanka. "The pure painting of Jürgen Möbius flows through us as a timeless expression of memory and energy, ploughing our perception and bringing us the happiness of seeing authentic, immovable form. - Philippe Büttner Selection of solo exhibitions 1969 Galerie Würzner, Düsseldorf / Galerie Gurlitt, Mainz 1972 Städtische Galerie, Mainz 1973 Galerie Schloss Ringenberg Rathaus, Kleve 1974 Röderhausmuseum, Wuppertal 1976 Galerie Glasing, Osnabrück / Städtische Galerie, Herne 1977, 1997, 2004 Märkisches Museum, Witten 1979 Studio M, Bamberg / Staatstheater, Darmstadt 1980 Galerie Stolànovà, Wiesbaden / Mittelrheinmuseum, Koblenz 1982 Galerie Dornhöfer, Mainz 1984 Galerie Neumühle, Schlangenbad 1985 Landesmuseum, Mainz / Kunstverein, Ludwigshafen / Nassauischer Kunstverein, Wiesbaden 1986 Museum, Bochum / Galerie der Stadt Iserlohn 1987, 1990 Galerie Klaus Kiefer, Essen 1987, 2000 Galerie Ulrike Buschlinger, Wiesbaden 1988 Kunsthalle Darmstadt 1988, 1992, 1996, 1999 Galerie Leonhard, Basel 1992, 2002 Galerie Zulauf, Freisheim 1994 Galerie Remy, Vallendar 1995 Sendezentrum des Zweiten Deutschen Fernsehens, Mainz 2001 Collegium oecumenicum, Bamberg / MVB Forum für Kultur und Wirtschaft, Mainz 2006 Adam Gallery, London Selection of group exhibitions 1969 ‘International Graphic Arts’, Galerie Dalléas Bordeaux, Paris 1975 ‘Deutscher Künstler-Bund’, Dortmund 1979 ‘Man and man’s Images’, Märkisches Museum Witten 1980 ‘Love-Dokuments of our Time’, Art Hall Darmstadt and Art Association Hannover 1982 ‘Work - Progress – Position’, Nassau Art Association Wiesbaden 1983 ‘Principle Hope – Utopic Aspects in Art and Culture of the 20th Century’, Museum Bochum 1986 ‘Selfportraits’, Gallery Klaus Kiefer Essen 1987 ‘The Dying and Death’, Gallery Klaus Kiefer Essen 1989 ‘Where are You, Revolution – Freedom, Liberty, Egality, Fraternity to-day’, Museum Bochum 1990 ‘Flight – a Problem within the Memory of Man’, Kunsthalle Darmstadt ‘Art and War 1939 – 89’, House of Cultures Berlin 1991 ‘Material and Form’, Pillnitz Castle Dresden and Pfalz Gallery Kaiserslautern 1995 20 Years Exhibitions, Chrämerhuus Langenthal, Schweiz 1998 ‘Works on Paper’, Klaus Kiefer Gallery Essen 2000 ‘Acquisitions 1900 – 2000’, Mittelrhein-Museum Koblenz 2001 ‘Strange Pictures’, Klaus Kiefer Gallery Essen 2002 ‘10 Years Buschlinger Gallery’, Buschlinger Gallery Wiesbaden 2004 ‘Eternal Space – Pictures and Sculptures’, Dome of Bamberg 2005 Art Fair Chicago, Adam Gallery, London Selected Bibliography Mittelrheinisches Landesmuseum (Hrsg.): Jürgen Möbius - Neue Bilder, Mainz 1985. Matthias Alfen German Sculptor Modern Expressionist Painting Psychogram
By Matthias Alfen
Located in Surfside, FL
Matthias Alfen’s series of Janus figures are an innovation in figural art predicated on the advances made by the Futurist sculptor and painter Umberto Boccioni and the Modernist Alberto Giacometti. The qualities of chance and spontaneity, necessarily excluded in the sculptural work, are clearly evident in his drawings and paintings. “Psychograms” of unchoreographed hand movements display wide variation, repeatedly playing through one form after another. In the end, this multitude of variation serves to enhance the logic, consistency, and seductively rich appearance of Alfen’s designed sculptural works. Represented by Gallery Schuckin in New York, Paris, France, and Moscow, Russia. Matthias Alfen’s was strongly influenced by his family’s experience during World War II. His grandfather Klemens Alfen (1894-1955) was an accomplished painter and photographer, recognized for his landscape photography and for his technique (Special Honors for Excellence in Photo-Print Technology, 1932). He enjoyed the friendship and support of many in the artistic community, a community largely influenced by its German Jewish members. Having lost his entire circle of friends under Nazi oppression. Klemens, although not Jewish, also suffered under the Nazis for refusing to join them and struggling in post-war Germany, which had nothing to offer an artist like him, Klemens took his own life. At around the age of 16 he worked for some weeks as an assistant at his uncle’s art studio. Fritz Koenig...

Mixed Media Gravel Painting, Sculpture Abstract Expressionist Thomas Nozkowski
Located in Surfside, FL
Thomas Edward Nozkowski (American, 1944-2019). Original mixed media abstract composition art utilizing colored rock gravel. Titled, "Gravel Piece." Hand signed on verso, dated 5/73. Provenance: Collection of the Bass Museum of Art, Miami Beach, Florida (Museum Inventory No. t.13.2000.053.) Thomas Nozkowski was an American contemporary painter. He achieved a place of prominence through his small scale paintings and drawings that push the limits of visual language. His work appeared in more than 300 exhibitions over the past 40 years. He had more than 70 solo exhibitions, and 24 of his paintings were featured in a large-scale retrospective in 1987 at Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC Nozkowski was born in Teaneck, New Jersey and raised in Dumont, where he graduated from Dumont High School in 1961. He spent his youth in the New Jersey suburbs, admiring New York culture from afar before moving there after graduating high school. His father worked in an Alcoa Aluminum factory and then as a postman. His mother worked in factories and as a bookkeeper. One of his aunts was a schoolteacher who gave him and his younger sister art supplies. When he was a senior in high school he won a scholarship to attend a painting class at New York University's School of Education, where he studied with Robert Kaupelis and Hale Woodruff. While he earned his BFA at Cooper Union, Nozkowski was making sculpture. He graduated in 1967. He later transitioned to large scale abstract expressionist painting, and exhibited some of his earliest works in group shows at the storied Betty Parsons Gallery. Richard Tuttle had his first show a year after he began assisting Betty Parsons. Thomas Nozkowski worked for her after graduating from Cooper Union. Between 1949 and 1951. In the course of 36 years, the Betty Parsons Gallery mounted important early shows of Robert Rauschenberg, Kenzo Okada, Richard Pousette-Dart, Leon Polk Smith, Forrest Bess, Sonia Sekula, Herbert Ferber, Seymour Lipton, Eduardo Paolozzi, Alexander Liberman, Barbara Chase-Riboud, Richard Lindner, Agnes Martin, Ellsworth Kelly, John Walker, Patrick Ireland...

William Stephens Shields, Jr., 1925 - 2010 "Dreamer's Forest" 1994 Oil on panel 48"x36" artist framed Signed lower right William Stephens Shields, Jr., 1925 - 2010 He was born in san Francisco, in 1931, Bill moved to Texas, where he grew up. Moved to New York in 1940 and later joined the Naval Air Corps at the age of 18. He served as an Aviation Cadet in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945. At the end of WWII, Bill returned to Texas. At 21, Bill re-focused his energy and enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Art as an Illustration major. What followed was a whirlwind of success, great friendships and a sense of belonging he had never before experienced. Art was his calling and the art-world could not have been less prepared for the likes of Bill Shields. He took them by storm, first Houston, then San Francisco, followed by New York in the late 60's. For 35 years, Bill produced some of the country's best illustrations: fresh, playful, loose and innovative. His illustrations were coveted by such clients as Bantam Books, Time Life, MacMillan Publishing Co., and were awarded numerous gold medals by the Societies of Illustrators in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, and the Houston Artists Guild. Later, following inspirational trips to Mexico and France, Bill shifted his attention to the self-directed world of fine art. After years of sculpting, making assemblages, painting nudes and landscapes, he settled on the exploration of large abstract oil paintings. His paintings have been exhibited in galleries in San Francisco, Connecticut and New York. Abstract Painted Ceramic Tile Pop Art Painting Italian Neo Figurative Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
This painted ceramic tile by Italo Scanga, epitomizes the characteristics of his oeuvre. Polychrome and vibrant art from the Memphis Milano era. This is signed with his initials. This is reminiscent of the mid century work of Jean Lurcat and Jean Picart le Doux. Italo Scanga (June 6, 1932 - July 7, 2001), an Italian-born American artist, was known for his sculptures, prints and, paintings, mostly created from found objects. In his youth in Calabria, Italy he worked as a cabinetmaker's apprentice and studies sculpture with a man who carved statues of saints. Italo Scanga was an innovative neo Dada, neo-Expressionist, and neo-Cubist multimedia artist who made assemblage, collage, sculptures of ordinary objects and created prints, glass, and ceramic works. Modern Italian abstract geometric folk art. Scanga's materials included natural objects like branches and seashells, as well as kitsch figurines, castoff musical instruments and decorative trinkets salvaged from flea markets and thrift shops. He combined these ingredients into free-standing assemblages, which he then painted. Although visually ebullient, the results sometimes referred to gruesome episodes from Greek mythology or the lives and deaths of martyred saints. He considered his artistic influences to be sweepingly pan-cultural, from African sculpture to Giorgio de Chirico. He often collaborated with the sculptor Dale Chihuly, who was a close friend. Constructed of wood and glass, found objects or fabric, his ensembles reflect a trio of activities—working, eating, and praying. These activities dominate the lives of those who live close to the land, but they are also activities that are idealized by many who contemplate, romantically, a simpler, bucolic life. Italo graduated from Michigan State University where he befriended fellow artists Richard Merkin and David Pease. He studied under Lindsey Decker who introduces him to welding and sculpture after his initial interest in photography. Also studies with Charles Pollock, the brother of Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock. His first teaching job was at University of Wisconsin (through 1964). where he met Harvey Littleton, a fellow instructor. He later moves to Providence, Rhode Island,I to teach at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Is colleagues with artists Richard Merkin and Hardu Keck. Starts a correspondence with HC Westermann. Spends summers teaching at Brown University; colleague of Hugh Townley. Moves to State College, PA, and teaches at Pennsylvania State University for one year. Meets artists Juris Ubans, Harry Anderson, Richard Frankel, and Richard Calabro, who remain friends throughout his career. 1967: David Pease helps him get a tenure track position at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA, . Artists he works closely with include Ernest Silva, Lee Jaffe, Donald Gill, and William Schwedler. Meets graduate student Dale Chihuly while lecturing at RISD and develops a lifelong friendship. 1969: One person exhibition, Baylor Art Gallery, Baylor University, Waco, TX. Works very closely with students Larry Becker and Heidi Nivling (who later run a gallery in Philadelphia, PA), and Harry Anderson. Welcomes many artists into his home including Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Bruce Nauman (a former student), Vito Acconci, Ree Morton and Rafael Ferrer. 1973: "Saints Glass" at 112 Greene Street Gallery, NYC. Installation at the Institute of Contemporary Art at University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. Meets Gordon Matta Clark and contributes to an artist cookbook. Goes to Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, WA, founded by Dale Chihuly, as a visiting artist. He continues to work there annually through 2001. Works over the years with Pilchuck artists Richard Royal, Seaver Leslie, Jamie Carpenter, Joey Kirkpatrick, Flora Mace, Robbie Miller, Billy Morris, Buster Simpson...

Untitled: Blue Linear Abstract on Green
Located in New York, NY
Allen Kubach (American) "Untitled: Blue Linear Abstract on Green" , Oil on Canvas, Monogram signed on rear canvas, Late 20th Century, 1997 Colors: Blue and Green Allen Kubach and Marjorie Shaw Kubach were two married artists who explored their artistic styles together throughout their careers. The artists showed their works largely throughout New Jersey and New York, sometimes joining together for the same exhibits. The works that Detour Gallery has acquired are representative of the pair’s time in which they explored abstraction. These works were made in a postwar era, following the art world’s shifted focus on New York as the center for new modern art. Art at this time was evolving, and the experimentation of abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction, and minimalism evidently paved the path for later artists such as Allen and Marjorie. As noted in the New York Times by Vivian Reynor, Allen Kubach “specializes in strong colors, expressing them in vertical and diagonal grids laid one on top of another.” In such a manner, Allan reflects these contemporary ideals that were taking New York by storm in the 1960’s and 70’s. The linear focus and non objective use of color found in Allen’s work correlates to that of the pioneers of abstract and minimalistic work such as Sol Le Witt...
