The work was composed by Nicolaes Maes, an artist widely regarded as the most prominent portrait painter of his era in Amsterdam. Fashionably styled, Portrait of a Noble Lady exemplifies the mature style of Maes, executed with the same artistry and attention to detail he imparted on his most important private commissions.
This work by Maes comes from the second half of his career and follows in the rich tradition of the great Flemish Baroque painters Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck. Like these artists, Maes excels at not only capturing his subjects with a technical perfection but also their inherent elegance and grace. The sitter is draped in luxurious white and red silks and pearls, underscoring the importance and prosperity of his wealthy clientele. She is placed against a dark backdrop, enabling a striking chiaroscuro effect characteristic of the artist’s portraits.
Maes’s immense talent for detail and composition is clearly evident. In both palette and proportion, it embodies the somewhat austere style preferred by the artist, which emphasized a painstaking study of the costumes, hairstyles and accessories of his subjects. Such elaborate and highly detailed costuming in portraiture was a fashionable way to show one's wealth in the 17th century, particularly among the emerging class of wealthy merchants. Similar works by the painter can be found in the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), National Gallery (London), National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) and Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others.
Nicolaes Maes was born in Dordrecht in 1634 to a prosperous cloth merchant. Around 1848, he moved to Amsterdam to study under Rembrandt for several years before returning to his native Dordrecht, where he established himself as a painter of genre scenes and portraits. Jadviga Žilvinska (1918-2010) was born in Tallinn.
She grew up in Liepāja, where her great interest in art began and strengthened, which led the young artist to study at the Art Academy of Latvia. During her studies at the Academy, she studied with K. Ubāns, V. Tone and J. Liepiņš, and defended her diploma thesis under the guidance of L. Liberts. Later on, she devoted her entire life to art, working at the Liepāja School of Fine Arts and as a portraitist at the "Māksla" combine.
She had four favourite themes: landscapes, portraits, flowers and sacred painting. Her works have lyricism and inner harmony. In the portraits, we see not only the outer form of a person, but the artist allows us to look into the very essence of a person - it is likely that the models themselves often saw something new and bright in themselves through the artist's vision.
The works are executed in various techniques - tempera, oil, pastel and watercolour.

William Gale was a talented history and genre oil painter, born in London in 1823. He won many accolades as a student at Royal Academy Schools, and travelled to Italy in 1851 and the Middle East in 1862 and 1867. Due to his many influences , Gale's paintings are in an array of styles including sentimental, biblical, mythological subjects, portraits and orientalist pictures. A delightful pair of three quarter length portraits of Italian women by Federico Andreotti. The first work shows a young woman in fine clothing with a basket of flowers in her hands. The second painting depicts a traditionally dressed woman holding a Chianti Fiasco and other wine bottles.
Federico or Federigo Andreotti was a genre and figure painter born in Florence on 6 March, 1847. He showed artistic talent from an early age and at 9 years old began receiving art lessons from the miniature painter Angiolo Tricca (1817-1884). At the age of 17, he attended the Art Academy in Florence where he studied under Enrico Pollastrini (1817-1876), the President of the Academy. Whilst there he won a competition and made a name for himself by producing amusing genre scenes and costume studies. His success attracted the patronage of wealthy and notable clients including the King of Italy who commissioned him to paint a large historical painting of Savonarola. As well as working as an artist, he also taught art at the Florentine Academy where he was made Professor in 1879.
During the same year, he began exhibiting abroad and made his debut at the Royal Academy in London, where he continued to show his works until 1883. He is believed to have spent time in England around this period where he also exhibited at other galleries including the Royal Manchester Institution, United Galleries, Arthur Tooth & Sons and Thomas Richardson & co.
He spent most of his life in Florence where he died on 30 October, 1930. His painting of Savonarola is held by the Italian government. Other examples of his work can be found in a number of UK public art collections including the Blackburn Museum, Fylde Town Hall, Glasgow Museum, Hawarth Art Gallery and Towneley Hall Art Museum.
Presentation: The paintings are housed in new, English made gilt frames which are in excellent condition.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, these works are offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.
