Finding the Right Curtains-valances for You
From luxe drapes in sumptuous hues to airy shades crafted from natural bamboo, window treatments have become a hot topic. The right antique and vintage curtains and valances can change and improve the feel and mood of any room in your home.
Window treatments such as curtains and valances serve multiple functions: filtering light, maintaining privacy and injecting personality. Like furniture, they have the ability to transform and elevate a room. And while it takes work to seamlessly integrate window treatments with the surrounding decor, it will be worth the effort!
Designer Brigette Romanek, whose notable clients include Beyoncé and Gwyneth Paltrow, believes that the perfect window treatment blends usability with aesthetics. That mix is elegantly exemplified in this dual-use Los Angeles living room. “In the daytime, you can pull the drapes and let all that light in and enjoy the incredible view," explains Romanek. "This space is also a media room, and the blinds do a great job of blacking out the room for weekend afternoon movie marathons.”
A firm believer in the power of window dressings, Starrett Ringbom puts a lot of thought into choosing just the right type and design. Just as lighting is an essential part of any interior design project — having the right light fixture is indeed key to creating an attractive, radiant room — a well-chosen pair of curtains or well-placed window valance can make all the difference. Regardless of their appearance, though, window dressings must work with the existing architecture. As Ringbom puts it, “Window treatments are a vital component of any room design.”
Frances Merrill, of Reath Design, sympathizes with those struggling to find the right dressing for their windows. “Curtains are so hard! The window treatment and the fabric used can make such a difference in how light moves through a room.”
On 1stDibs, the collection of antique and vintage curtains and valances for sale includes velvet curtains, mid-century curtains featuring interesting prints and other textiles for your space.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 6, 2023Yes, you can use curtains as a room divider. To do so, you will need to mount hanging hardware on the ceiling. One of the biggest benefits of using curtains to divide rooms is that they are easy to maneuver when you want to open up a space or close off an area. Shop a range of curtains on 1stDibs.
- Does vintage mean used?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertMay 30, 2024No, vintage doesn't mean used. Vintage generally refers to pieces that are at least 20 years old. Due to their age, many vintage items were previously used. However, you can sometimes find vintage clothing, accessories, furniture and other items that still retain their original tags and show no evidence of previous use. On 1stDibs, explore a wide range of vintage furniture.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022While a vintage copper kettle may look great for your décor, it may be harmful to use if it doesn’t have a protective lining. Most copper items these days have a thin lining of stainless steel to make them safe to use. You can shop a range of antique and vintage copper cookware on 1stDibs.
- How do I use vintage hair combs?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022To use vintage hair combs, turn the comb upside-down so that the teeth point upward. Sweep back the section of hair that you wish to pin using a comb. Then, hold your hair in place with one hand and guide the teeth of the comb into the section. On 1stDibs, find a selection of vintage hair combs.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 27, 2023How you use vintage clip-on earrings depends on what type of backing they have. Some simply feature a hinged clip that you open, slip over your ear and then press gently to close. Others may require you to turn a screw or shift a tension bar. On 1stDibs, find a large selection of vintage clip-on earrings.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022How to use a vintage wine opener depends on its design. Many vintage openers feature a two-prong design. The prongs slide down on either side of the cork. Then, you wiggle the opener back and forth while pulling upward to lift it out. On 1stDibs, find a range of vintage wine openers.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022If your vintage Polaroid camera is still in working order, you can absolutely still use it. The one thing to check is whether the compatible film is readily available.
