Finding the Right Seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

When people mention two-tone in reference to watches, they’re referring to the combination of gold and steel. This mix of contrasting metals is quite attractive and desirable. Yes, a two-carat diamond is generally rarer than a smaller diamond, especially high-quality two-carat diamonds. When larger diamonds are found in nature, they usually have flaws. And prices per carat don’t increase as weight increases. A three-carat gem can be less valuable than a one-carat stone, for example, if all of the other attributes are of lesser quality in the larger diamond. Shop an assortment of diamond jewelry from some of the world’s top jewelers on 1stDibs.

One papier-mâché method uses paper pulp that’s created by soaking and boiling paper, and then a glue is added to get it to stick. The other method of doing papier-mâché involved taking strips of paper and gluing them together or layering the strips. Both methods require some sort of reinforcement to hold their shape. Find a collection of papier-mâché products on 1stDibs.

  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A two-stone ring is often called a toi et moi ring. The phrase comes from French and means "you and me." Normally, toi et moi rings have an open design with one stone on each end. When you slip the rings on, the two stones appear side by side. You'll find a variety of toi et moi rings on 1stDibs.
  • Gold used in jewelry comes in 3 colors: white gold, yellow gold, and rose gold. If a piece is made with two-tone gold, this means that a combination of any of the three colors is used to make the jewelry. For example, a ring could have white gold prongs and basket, set in a yellow gold band. This is considered two-tone gold as two colors were used in the ring.

Whether you need one or two accent chairs depends on your personal preferences and the space. First, consider the layout of your room. In a small space, two accent chairs may make a seating area feel cramped, while having just one may result in a larger room feeling too empty. Also, think about how many people you're likely to entertain in your seating area and what other furniture is present in the space. If you frequently need additional seating to accommodate large groups, you may want to purchase a second accent chair. Find a wide range of accent chairs on 1stDibs.

What wearing two wedding rings means is up to individual interpretation. Some people like to sandwich their engagement rings between two bands to represent their promise to marry their spouse now being sealed in place with their vows. Others may receive a second band ring for an anniversary and wear it alongside their wedding ring. It's also possible for two wedding rings to have no special meaning, as some brides wear two for a symmetrical look or to hold their engagement rings in place. On 1stDibs, explore a large collection of wedding rings.
