American
Using ancient coins and traditional Balinese gem setting techniques, Steven Battelle’s jewelry offers history in the palm of your hand. The American jewelry designer and his team create rings, earrings and other accessories inspired by and incorporating historic coinage and materials used in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and Asia.
Battelle first encountered cabochon stones, which are gemstones polished and shaped rather than faceted, on a trip to Southeast Asia in 1987. A predecessor of modern jewelry, cabochons inspired Battelle to pursue a jewelry hobby while continuing to work as a veterinarian for exotic animals.
He became fascinated with the ornamentation styles used by ancient Majapahit Java and Siam cultures, eventually transitioning from veterinarian work to designing jewelry full-time. He developed a partnership with Balinese jewelry makers, a collaboration which became a key component in realizing his designs.
The Balinese partners hand-make each piece using traditional methods that have been passed down for generations. While conventional blow torches and modern tools are used in much of the work, the heart of the jewelry’s creation is grounded in an artisanal approach.

Seleucus was a Macedonian Greek general who was one of the successors of Alexander the Great. In the power struggles that followed Alexander's death, he became ruler of Asia Minor, Syria, Mesopotamia, and the Iranian Plateau, eventually assuming the title of basileus (king). The state he established on these territories, the Seleucid Empire, was one of the major powers of the Hellenistic world, until being overcome by the Roman Republic and Parthian Empire in the late second and early first centuries BC. In 306 BC Seleucus attempted to invade India, and in the subsequent settlement with the Mauryan Emperor Chandragupta, he obtained 500 war elephants which were later used in campaigns in the west. An interesting, authentic, silver denarius coin from the period of the Roman Republic in 79 BCE, featuring a griffin leaping, is set in a Steven Battelle ancient inspired handmade matte-finish textured bezel mount with 1.8mm VS1 diamond accent. The denarius was approximately the daily wage of a soldier in ancient Rome. This particular type of coin is known as a denarius serratus. The ragged edges of the coin are intentional (all coins of this type have them) to show that coin is pure silver. The minting of the coins was an annual office shared by 3 men, and they often placed the family name on the coins. This coin was minted by moneyer L.
