Altoon Sultan Paintings

Brooklyn, New York native Altoon Sultan is best known for her rural landscape scenes. Born in 1948, Sultan studied painting and earned both her BFA and MFA from Brooklyn College in 1969 and 1971, respectively. While at Brooklyn College, Sultan studied alongside painters Philip Pearlstein and Lois Dodd.

Sultan has been living on a farm in Vermont since 1994. She has been able to unite her experiences living on a farm and in nature with her artistic practices. Her daily gardening and farm living has become an inspiration. Her paintings, textiles, drawings and prints often incorporate organic forms, either in an abstracted state or figurative landscape imagery.

Marlborough Gallery hosted Sultan’s first solo show in 1977. Since then her works have been acquired by numerous museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, New York; Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts; National Gallery of Australia in Canberra; Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut; Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.; and the Fleming Museum of the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont.
