Bruno Zupan Art

American, b. 1939

Bruno Zupan has carried the traditions of the Impressionists into the modern era with grace, elegance and beauty. Using oil paints and watercolors, he creates gorgeous landscapes and drawings of everyday locations like gardens, city streets and beaches. From exquisite vistas to simple scenes of the world right outside his door, Zupan captures it all with inordinate care and attention to the interplay of light and color on canvas.

Zupan was born in Slovenia in 1939. As a young man, he studied art in Zagreb, Croatia, before pursuing his artistic passions in Paris in 1962. He moved again in 1964, this time to the United States, where he settled in New York City and began exhibiting his artwork in galleries and museums.

Zupan became an American citizen in 1969, but he continued to travel avidly. He regularly spent time in Italy, Spain, France and Mexico, painting their vibrant colors, light and scenery, often using a private courtyard or public plaza as a studio. He also established a studio in the Spanish village of Valldemossa on Majorca island.

Zupan’s work has been exhibited more than 200 times at museums and galleries throughout America, Europe, Japan and Kuwait. He was awarded a lifetime membership in the Society of French Artists in 1976. In 2000, the Columbus Museum of Art curated a retrospective of his work. Today, his art is in the collections of the Oklahoma City Museum of Art and the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
