James Henry Daugherty Art
American, 1889-1974
: A modernist figurative painter, he began his career in NYC in 1907 as an illustrator and became a Synchromist painter, 1915-22. He returned to a more realistic figurative style, and produced many murals during the WPA era (particularly in Connecticut) that reflect American historical subjects, the working class, African-Americans, and Native Americans. Illustrator: more than 50 books, including Abe Lincoln, Grows Up by Carl Sandburg; John Brown's Body by Benet; Knickerbocker's History of New York by Washington Irving; Daniel Boone (Newbery Medal, 1940); Poor Richard; and Robert Goddard: Trail Blazer to the Stars, (Macmillan, 1964). Carol Wax originally trained to be a classical musician at the Manhattan School of Music but fell in love with printmaking. Soon after she began engraving mezzotints she was asked by the renowned print dealer Sylvan Cole to exhibit at Associated American Artists Gallery, launching her career as a professional artist/printmaker. With the publication of her book, The Mezzotint: History and Technique, published by Abrams, 1990 and 1996, Carol added author and teacher to her credits. In the ensuing years she has expanded her repertoire of mediums beyond printmaking into other works on paper and painting.
