Ming Ming Abstract Paintings
Chinese, b. 1964
Born in Guangzhou, China, Ming-Ming Liang graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1987 and has become a celebrated artist known for her expressive depictions of life and freedom. Her art, deeply influenced by California’s landscapes, focuses on capturing the ephemeral interplay between light and shadow, particularly in her acclaimed flower series.
Her unique style blends memory and imagination. She uses layered techniques to explore form, texture, and color. This approach creates paneled surfaces where elements like light, air, and color merge, producing vibrant playfulness in her works.
A respected member of the Colored Pencil Society of America and other art associations, Ming-Ming has dedicated over three decades to art creation and education. She now lives and teaches in the San Francisco Bay Area, continually inspiring new artists. Ming-Ming's work, characterized by numerous national exhibitions, awards, and media features, is widely collected by organizations and private collectors around the world, showcasing her significant impact on the art community.
"My painting is an expression of the beauty of life and freedom. My inspirations come from my surroundings: gardens, California’s wildflowers, trees, sunshine, wind, clouds, and tides. All of these drive me to seek how they interact.
For many years, I have focused on the theme of flowers. I intend to capture these forms, compositions, and movements between light and shadow to integrate my memories and imagination onto canvas. In my flower series, I explore form, texture, color, and light in a unique freehand style.
I usually paint in a certain hue, then rework and re-layer with brush strokes and textures to create paneled surfaces, where the objects, light, and air often meld into one; colors disperse with warmth diffusing into the background. The process is full of the possibilities for the playfulness of art." - Ming Mingto

Large Modernist Figurative Abstract Oil Painting BASKET
By Marlene Bauer
Located in Surfside, FL
A Pacific Northwest native, Bauer was born in Vancouver, Washington, and has maintained a studio in Portland, Oregon since 1976. She attended the Pacific Northwest College of Art and the University of Oregon where she received her M.F.A. Since that time, she has exhibited her work throughout the Northwest while teaching art as an associate professor at Marylhurst University.
Bauer applies her modernist approach to her artwork, and her paintings become a sort of balancing act in reconciling her subjects and her techniques. Teetering between abstraction and representational, Bauer's houses are depicted as simplified forms, exploiting a universal iconography. The recognizable elements in her artwork – trees, buildings – are unconventionally depicted in wide patches of overlapping color, "pulling each painting away from literal interpretation." Marlene Bauer's abstractions stem from her interest in the visual dynamics of a quick impression of a landscape from a moving car or a glance out a window.
The artist has exhibited her work in solo exhibitions at the Laura Russo Gallery, the Elizabeth Leach Gallery (both in Portland), and the Davidson Galleries in Seattle. Bauer's artwork is included in many of the region's public and private collections including the King County Regional Justice Center, Bank of America, the City of Portland, the City of Seattle, the Oregon State...

'Kum Ba Ya' - Contemporary Geometric Abstraction Pixelation - Bosch
By Robert Hightower
Located in Atlanta, GA
'Kum Ba Ya' is an abstract pointillist painting featuring hues of red, green, yellow, blue and black.
Robert Hightower is inspired by the work of Giotto, Hieronymus Bosch, Jean-François Millet, Roger Brown, Howard Arkley and Julian Opie.
This piece is a part of a special immersive gallery installation, “The Apocalypse Simulacra,” which is a narrative presentation of the twilight of humanity, at the fulcrum of extinction by Atlanta-based artist Robert Hightower. Through stage-set constructions, readymade plastic models and paintings, Hightower investigates the duality of right/wrong, good/bad, eternal/ephemeral in light of the imminent end of the Human Epoch. It depicts the ideological origins of corporate greed and power, the reality of wealth distribution in the “American Dream,” and the socio-economic and environmental impacts of that collective greed. After receiving a BFA in sculpture from the University of Georgia, Hightower moved to New York City and participated in The Bronx Museum of the Art’s AIM Fellowship (Artist In the Marketplace). While in New York, his interests expanded to include art installation and the creation of spaces, and has since designed and built many unique homes, penthouses and restaurants throughout the United States. Hightower has returned home to Atlanta and will be presenting his most comprehensive body of work to date, “The Apocalypse Simulacra,” a unique universe of beauty, dichotomy and uncertainty.
ARTIST STATEMENT
The 'Apocalypse Simulacra' is a presentation of the twilight of humanity, at the fulcrum of extinction.
The climate is the subject. The Simulacra is the Theme. First discussed by Plato, the Simulacra is the search for Truth in Duality. Developing into Post-Modernism with Nietzsche’s: truth=Truth. Now with Bauvillard, the Simulacra has evolved beyond Post-Modernism, into the wholesale confusion of the real/fake, the true/false… between reality and hyper-reality. This crumbling, confusing of the truth (not necessarily the Truth) is our Reality.
For over two decades, I have created large format paintings of strip malls, suburban houses and toys. These paintings present singular images flattened-out (almost floating) on color-fields. They create a certain duality - a loving portrait of an inanimate object that would not normally be singled-out for affection. With my latest work, I have added a variety of iconic images: an airplane, a whisky bottle, a woman floating in a pool. The icons are presented in a pixelated or degenerated state. In addition to paintings, I have used adult-size building blocks to create sculptures or three-dimensional paintings. Using a child's toy at an adult-scale gives the building blocks an austere and powerful presence. The building blocks echo the blocks of the pixelated paintings...

Questions About Ming Ming Abstract Paintings
- What is a Ming chair?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021A Ming chair refers to a typically elaborate and sophisticated piece of seating furniture that was designed during China’s Ming dynasty — an era that saw a deepening of interest in interior design and furniture in the East Asian country owing to the evolution of joinery techniques and a rise in Chinese commerce. Celebrated Danish furniture maker Hans Wegner transitioned from cabinetry to furniture design in the 1940s and, in 1944, began to develop seating based on Ming dynasty chairs.

Ming porcelain is characterized by a blue underpaint that was then covered by a white glaze. Find a selection of antique Chinese Ming plates and porcelain wares on 1stDibs.
- How was Ming porcelain made?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Ming porcelain was made from a mixture of clay and minerals. - How do I identify a Ming vase?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022There are a few tell-tale signs you can look for to determine whether your Ming vase is real or fake. Authentic Ming vases will have a mark on the bottom to note what Emperor they were made for. There are several different markings so it helps to familiarize yourself with them. Also, Ming vases have very little iron in the clay. Iron turns reddish when the clay is fired if there is no glaze over it. Look inside the vase to see what color the unglazed clay is. Shop a collection of authentic Ming vases from some of the world’s top stores on 1stDibs.
- How can I spot a fake Ming vase?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022To spot a fake Ming vase, first look at the unglazed paste at the bottom edge of the rim. There, you should see a reddish brown edge where the glaze stops. If not, it's possible the vase is not from the Ming dynasty. You can shop a collection of expertly vetted Ming vases from some of the top sellers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 4, 2024To identify Ming dynasty furniture, first check the legs, back, undersides and other inconspicuous areas to see if you can locate any maker's markings. If you do, snap a photo with your phone and perform a reverse image search. You may be able to determine the maker and year of production. The Ming dynasty lasted from 1368 to 1644 in China. Furniture from this time period often features natural woods and shows off simple lines. Because artisans working during the era typically used mortise and tenon joinery, authentic Ming Dynasty furnishings will usually not have any visible nails or screws. However, there are many convincing reproductions on the market, so experts generally recommend having a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer perform the identification process for you. Shop a collection of Ming dynasty furniture on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021A Ming dynasty vase is going to be worth a lot. In 2021, a blue and white Chinese bowl was bought at a yard sale in Connecticut that turned out to be a rare Ming dynasty-era ceramic work. It is estimated to be valued at between $300,000 and $500,000. Shop a range of antique and vintage vases on 1stDibs.
