Vibeke Alfelt Art

VIBEKE ALFELT (DENMARK, 1934–99)

Vibeke Alfelt was a noted Danish modernist and graphic artist. She was the eldest daughter of the Danish artists Carl-Henning Pedersen and Else Alfelt, with whom she studied from an early age. Like her parents, Vibeke Alfelt was deeply involved with the avant-garde COBRA movement and participated in the decoration of Bregnerødhytten (Cobra Ceiling) in 1949. Throughout a long career, the figure of the horse took on an increasingly important symbolic importance in her painting, eventually becoming a lyrical leitmotif which she employed as a formal means to promote the poetic unity of her work. Alfelt traveled abroad frequently to study, including to Italy, Germany, France and elsewhere in Europe. She exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards, including at the Danish Royal Academy's Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Vibeke Alfelt works are held in the permanent collections of state museums and private collections, including at Sophienholm. Alfelt is well-listed in all relevant art reference works.
