A striking two train bracket clock of exceptional quality by one of the great nineteenth century makers. The eight day twin fusee movement strikes on a blued steel gong behind a silvered arabic dial, signed Dent and numbered 58242 on both th dial and the back plate. Housed in a solid mahogany case with brass mounts and a gadrooned pergoda top surmounted by an acorn finial, and supported by bun feet. The sides ar pierced with attractive fish scale sound vents lined with dark blue velvet.
The movement and case are both of remarkable quality, as you would expect from a clock made by Dent. The history of Dent & Co. spans three centuries of precision watch and clock making in Great Britain. Established in 1814 by Edward J. Dent, the company embraced the Victorian fervour for technological innovation and created precision chronometers to navigate the Royal Navy and guide some of the most intrepid explorers on their voyages. The British Empire was in full expansion and its maritime tradition had produced some remarkable technological breakthroughs from the late 18th century. Propelling the impetus of Britain’s primacy, Dent proved a key player in Victorian horological history manufacturing the Standard Clock at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich which was to keep “Greenwich Mean Time” the time to which all others in the Empire were referred (better known today as G.M.T.) and continued to do so until replaced by an electronic clock in 1946. Dent also made probably the most famous clock in the world - the Great Clock for the Houses of Parliament, familiarly known as Big Ben.

This virtue is represented as a patinated bronze statue of of a classically draped bearded standing male figure leaning on a gilt bronze plinth legs crossed and with a sword in its scabbard by his side. There is an an open scroll on top of the plinth held in place by the figure's elbow arm raised and forefinger of his hand pointing at his temple in a gesture associated with thinking. The plinth housing the clock dial and movement is decorated with a serpent coiled around a rod which along with the sword and scroll are associated with "La Prudenzia".

A fine and early clock, the case by Henri Picard of Paris and the movement by Raingo Frères. It is beautifully made of ormolu (mercury fire gilded bronze doré) mounted with exquisitely painted Sèvres style porcelain with a Bleu Celeste ground. The front panel shows a young couple, tending a flock of sheep in a tranquil country setting, a sleepy town in the distance. Above the dial she sits in fine clothes and the urn to the top shows them older together, a story of their love. Side panels are beautifully decorated with bows, flowers and a quiver of arrows. Other panels are delicately decorated with over glaze gilt decoration with applied porcelain 'jewels'. The porcelain is all signed to the reveres and numbered with movement number '1453', unusually the case is also numbered. The dial is porcelain with its original finely cut brass Breguet hands and is signed for the clockmaker Raingo Frères. The rear bezel is glazed to allow the movement to be seen. Please note that this design does not have a front glass over the dial.
The French movement is of high quality and is by Raingo Freres. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock running, please ask and we will send you a link.
Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding clean and bright with only slight wear and discolouration. Porcelain is also excellent with no damage and hardly any wear. A few porcelain jewels are missing from the top left hand panel where the clock has been held for winding. The dial has a slight firing fault near the number five.
Zacharie Raingo was apprenticed in Paris in 1790 and went on to establish Raingo Frères in 1813. Initially specialising in precision astronomical clocks and then after 1825 clocks and bronzes. Clients included the Emperor and Empress. The firm exhibited at many of the important exhibitions of the second half of the 19th century and was known for the fine quality of its ormolu.
Henri Picard - The important founder and Gilder Henri Picard was based in Paris at 6, rue Jarente from 1831 to 1839, before moving to 10, rue de la Perle. The firm was active until around 1890. Celebrated for the high quality of his production, Henri Picard supplied many important patrons, including garnand table pieces for the petits appartements of Emperor Napoleon III at the Louvre. An important pair of twelve-light candelabra by Picard remain in the Musée du Louvre today.
