One of the most vivid small Thangkas I have ever owned. Purchased from a wealthy Mongolian collector along with 3 other fine small Thangkas in the 1990's from his very best personal pieces as a thank you for a long friendship. Painted thangka is 6.75 x 9 inches, frame is 13 x 15 1/8 inches. Custom mat and frame, with museum glass and silk matting. Exquisite. Not inexpensive for a small Thangka, but you won't find better. Probably early to mid 20th century (in reality many of the Mongolian Thangkas sold in the west as 19thC are early 20thC, as the environment there causes cloth and paper to usually soil, darken and degrade. The number of truly early Thangkas that are bright and clean are very few. Even most of the early/mid 20th Cones show great wear and soiling. This one almost sure lived all of its life in a large Gau box or in a drawer or trunk, as the colors look as bright as the day it was painted. It was very difficult 20 years ago to find pieces like this- today is nearly impossible. Many of my pieces like this end up...

Junichiro Sekino Signed Limited Edition Japanese Print Yosaku Feeling Ill, 1948

A truly wonderful and exceedingly rare early limited edition woodblock print by famed Japanese artist/printmaker Junichiro Sekino.
This print, titled "Yosaku Feeling Ill", is one of Sekino's earliest known works. A very dramatic image done in black and white, this work features the artist himself in a self-portraiture as he comforts his young son (who evidently does not feel well) in an almost playful and knowing manner.
The print is double signed - once in white ink within the image and also hand pencil signed and numbered (9/30) by Sekino in the lower margin. The image features a focused and rather direct composition emphasized by the use of just the two colors. It is an exquisite and very rare/hard-to-find work. Quite engaging. A must for collectors of Sekino's work.
Junichiro Sekino was largely considered, along with Kiyoshi Saito, to be one of Japan's paramount 20th-century master print artists. Both were prominent leaders of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Sekino's works can be found in many museums including:
The Museum of Modern Art, N. Y., the Art Institute Chicago, the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, the British Museum, and the Portland Art Museum among many other Fine museums throughout the world.

For British-born furniture designer Andrianna Shamaris, the Japanese concept of beauty in imperfection isn’t limited to her Wabi Sabi collection. She embraces it in her New York City apartment as well. In the living area, for instance, she retained the fireplace’s original black marble while swathing its frame and the rest of the room in bright white.
“We left the fireplace very clean and wabi-sabi, so that it blended into the wall,” says Shamaris, who further appointed the space with a hand-carved antique daybed whose plush pillows are upholstered in antique textiles from the Indonesian island of Sumba.
