1960 Big Boys, Woodblock Print by Tomio Kinoshita, Japan
Located in Point Richmond, CA
Tomio Kinoshita (1923 – 2014) Big Boys, 1960 Woodblock print Image size: 32.75 high by 22 inches wide (83 by 56 cm) Paper size: 35.5 high by 23.75 inches wide (90 by 60.3 cm) Signed: in pencil lower right, Tomio Kinoshita Titled: in pencil at lower left Edition: 30/50 Condition: Very good The woodblock for this large print was carved in 1958, just three years after Kinoshita’s began creating woodblocks. This print was signed and dated in 1960, but not numbered; prints were also pulled from this block in the 1970s, so it must have been one of more popular images. One of his students has written, “As time progressed further, the postwar era saw improvements in nutrition, and children became taller and heavier than in the past, but their lack of physical exercise and severely inferior physical abilities became a social problem; this is ironically depicted in Big Boys.” In 1963, Kinoshita told him that he had just finished pulling a print of this image in response to a request from Unichi Hiratsuka...

Chinese Vermeil Sterling, Enameled Peacocks & Flowers Motif Vase & Stand
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
Chinese Vermeil Sterling, Enameled Peacocks & Flowers Motif Vase & Stand China, 20th Century A extraordinary piece of Chinese silversmithing, this Chinese vermeil (gilt) over sterling silver vase and stand is a true work of art. Dating to the mid -20th century, this stunning set showcases intricate pierced silver wirework and exquisite enameled motifs of peacocks and flowers. The hexagonal vessel is adorned with all-over pierced silver wirework, displaying the mastery of the silversmith. The fine alternating vignettes of peacocks and flowers add a touch of grace and beauty to the design. The vermeil finish, with its gilded surface, adds a luxurious touch and enhances the overall aesthetic. Stamped with 'Silver' on the inside bottom of the vase, this piece exemplifies the quality and authenticity of Chinese export silver. Its weight of 4.6 ounces speaks to the substantial nature of the silver used in its creation. The vase is raised on a conforming pedestal base, adding stability and enhancing the overall visual impact. Accompanying the vase is an associated Chinese carved hardwood stand, providing a complementary and elegant presentation. The Chinese export silver vase measures 4 inches in diameter and 3.5 inches in height. The carved Chinese hardwood stand...

DIMENSIONS Height: 9.25 inches Width: 11.5 inches Depth: 10.5 inches ABOUT MEIJI PERIOD The Meiji Era was the 44-year period of Japan's history from 1868 to 1912 when the country was under the rule of the great Emperor Mutsuhito. Also called the Meiji Emperor, he was the first ruler of Japan to wield actual political power in centuries. It was during the Meiji period that Japanese art students first went to Europe to study Western painting, and developed a new style of painting based on these techniques, known as yoga (or ‘Western style’). 20th Century Asian Sculpture Guan Yu Chinese Warrior Hand Carved Rosewood
Located in Topeka, KS
Handsome vintage Asian Chinoiserie rosewood Guan Yu or Chinese warrior hand carved larger scale sculpture. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 20th Century. A warrior is one who sacrifices himself for the good of others. His task is to take care of the elderly, the defenseless, those who cannot provide for themselves, and above all, children- the future of humanity. This is a magnificent vintage Chinese warrior or Guan Yu sculpture comprised of stunning rosewood with intricately hand carved details and a removeable guandao (Chinese pole weapon). In Chinese culture, General Guan Yu represents loyalty and valor. People believe that by having his image in art or sculpture in their home will protect their family from harm. And while we don’t believe he is going to break out with any actual martial arts moves; his fearless presence commands the room and demands attention! You may notice that in some of the photos our warrior friend is holding his guandao upside-down, don’t judge! Even the best of warriors tend to get exhausted from a long day of defending humanity and protecting mankind. A guy can get a little turned around! Just look at his expression… he is OVER it!! His hand is even up gesturing as if to say, “Talk to the hand!” LOL!! He is handsomely dressed from head to toe in full body armor and his long beard or Fu Manchu is flowing in the breeze. He stands proud upon a rounded square base at about 24 inches tall, so he is definitely larger scale, he will be fabulous in ANY room of your home, and he is the EPITOME of Chinoiserie excellence! Don’t let this incredible hand carved rosewood Chinese warrior sculpture...

Antique and Vintage Asian Art and Furniture

From Japanese handmade earthenware pottery, originating circa 14,500 B.C. and adorned with elaborate corded patterns known as jōmon, to natural elm case pieces and storage cabinets built in Qing dynasty–era China to mid-century Thai rice-paper charcoal rubbings, antique and vintage Asian art and furniture make for wonderful additions to all kinds of contemporary interiors.

Eastern elements elevate any home’s decor. Introduce zen sensibility to your living room, dining room and bedroom with the neutral color palettes and the natural materials such as rattan, bamboo and elm that we typically associate with traditional Asian furniture. Decorative handwoven embroideries and textiles originating from India and elsewhere on the continent, which can be draped over a bed or sofa or used as a wall hanging, can be as practical as they are functional, just as you wouldn’t seek out Japanese room-divider screens — often decorated with paintings but constructed to be lightweight and mobile — merely for privacy.

With everything from blanket chests to lighting fixtures to sculptures and carvings, it’s easy to tastefully bring serenity to your living space by looking to the treasures for which the East has long been known.

For British-born furniture designer Andrianna Shamaris, the Japanese concept of beauty in imperfection isn’t limited to her Wabi Sabi collection. She embraces it in her New York City apartment as well. In the living area, for instance, she retained the fireplace’s original black marble while swathing its frame and the rest of the room in bright white.

“We left the fireplace very clean and wabi-sabi, so that it blended into the wall,” says Shamaris, who further appointed the space with a hand-carved antique daybed whose plush pillows are upholstered in antique textiles from the Indonesian island of Sumba.

In the growing antique and vintage Asian art and furniture collection on 1stDibs, find ceramics from China, antiquities from Cambodia and a vast range of tables, seating, dining chairs and other items from Japan, India and other countries.
