Korean Antique Wood Stacking Nong Cabinets
Located in Atlanta, GA
A two-tier stacking storage cabinet on comforting stand, known as Nong in Korean, circa early 20th century (end of Joseon to Korean Empire Period). Each cabinet is fitted with a pair of paneled doors opening in the center to ample storage. The upper cabinet also has a row of four small drawers on top. The stacking cabinet directly sit directly on top of the support stand. Constructed in pine frame with exposed finger joints, they were simply finished in black lacquer on top and the sides. The facade of the cabinets, however, showcases meticulously chosen persimmon wood panels. The striking wood veneer with the bold black grains were perfectly matched in mirrored fashion. Visually arresting, the dark wood grains appear like bold strokes on an abstract ink painting. The yellow brass hardware is of relatively smaller sizes with subdued motifs in order not to overtake the beauty of the wood. They consist of drawer pulls, corner brackets, petal-form hinges and larger lock plates with cutout coin design. The interior was stripped clean showing the natural wood and some residues of old lining rice paper. We can trace the Nong cabinet on offer here to the more southern providences of the Korean Peninsula where Persimmon trees grow and were harvested, such as Jeolla Do or Chungcheong Do. The wood was beloved by Korean furniture makers in Yi dynasty and used on eye-catching pieces to emphasize the natural beauty of the wood. Examining the piece, one can see extensive and deep patina incurred from its age and previous use, yet the cabinet remains aesthetically stunning as an antique piece with an unexpected modern flare. For a similar two-tier chest with near identical configuration, size and wood used, see relic no 007182 in the collection of National Folk Museum of Korea in Seoul. The piece is also illustrated on the cover as well as page 46 of the book "Korean Antique...

Antique Korean Wedding Bandaji Chest Joseon Dynasty
Located in Atlanta, GA
A striking Korean Bandaji with lots of original patina circa 19th century of late Joseon Dynasty. Bandaji is known as drop front half-opening chest that was used to store family valuables and beddings. The Bandaji on offer was made in Pyongyang area in now North Korea and was clearly intended as a wedding chest. Constructed in limewood (also known as Lindenwood), which is rather plain and lacks grains, the chest was instead sumptuously decorated with nickel-copper (Paktong or white copper) plates, stripes and studs. Covering nearly the entire front of the cabinet, the metal plates were placed with eye-pleasing symmetry pattern. The top row is centered with a large square lock plate with latch and a heavy fish lock (no key), flanked by a pair of pulls set on plates in longevity mushroom pattern (lingzi). The middle row has a large cloud-form hinge in the center, flanked by three vertical pairs of rectangular hinges. The lower row features a large embossed and chased square plate with a character "Double happiness" in the center, a Hanja character reserved for the wedding ceremony. On both sides, large pair...

Antique Korean Mirror and Cosmetic Box
Located in Atlanta, GA
A mirror and cosmetic box known as Gyeongdae from Korea circa early 20th century of late Joseon to Korean Empire to colonial period. This type of small and elegant cabinet belongs personally to a lady for her makeup need. The upper part opens to a folding mirror that stands to a total measurement of 12.5 inches. The lower part consists of a single drawer to store the small accessories. The surface of this box is covered with Zelkova wood veneer with an expressive and eye-catching grains, contrasting nicely with yellow brass hardware that includes corner plates, butterfly shape hinges, a drawer pull and a square lock plate that opens when the brass knob is pushed forward. During Joseon Dynasty, this type of mirror box became popular, starting from the loyal families to the wealthy household. For a similar mirror and cosmetic box in the collection of Weisman Art Musuem, see illustration 63 on page 72 of "Traditional Korean Furniture" by Edward Reynolds Wright and Man Sill Pai. Another example in the collection of National Folk Musuem of Korea is illustrated on page 68 of "Korean Antique...

An antique Korean wood Bandaji cabinet from Yecheon area in Gyeongsang Do (southern part of Korean Peninsular) circa late 19th century Joseon Dynasty. This particular Bandaji features a partial drop-down front door and extended top plank with upturned end. The relatively plain hardware indicates that its origin was likely from the Northern part of the Gyeongsang Do. The construction suggests that the use of the piece might be to store books or manuscript, known as Ch'aek Bandaji. The cabinet was made from stained pine wood and fitted with black iron hardware. It is supported on carved curvy legs...

Early 20th Century Large Doors from Shanxi, China
Located in Singapore, SG
These large doors originated from Shanxi province, China, and are approx. 100-120 years old. Made of Elm & Pine, the most unique part about these doors are the many signs that are affixed on it, do note that although the doors are antique, these signs are added much later on. Besides the actual door number and road name, the others are the many accolades that this family has earned. Starting from the red plate on the left, this was given by the Shanxi Provincial People's Government. The Chinese words translate into "family of glory", this was to given to the household as a member of the family had retired from the military, to recognise his contribution to the country; it could also had been given to the family if the soldier was sacrificed during his service. Next to it is a small blue plate...

Antique Burmese Sadaik  Manuscript Chest.
Located in Point Richmond, CA
The chest is constructed of teak covered in lacquer and gold leaf with a hinged lid and detailed decoration on four sides. The high relief thayo lacquer depicts narrative scenes, bordered by a tendril vine frame with reserve cartouches of birds, beasts or men within.  The scenes may be from the Mahajanaka Jataka, one of the last Jataka tales of a life preceding the life of becoming the Buddha. This tale of endurance starts by depicting the rivalry between two brothers fighting for the throne. The lid depicts this great conflict having two battling elephants at center. Half of the surrounding characters are sending the opponents into retreat. The brother that is King is killed. The sides of the chest dynamically continue the story. On the right side of the front scene, the pregnant Queen at the front of the palace is informed of the King’s death  by her kneeling subjects.  On the left side of the front panel, the Queen is shown in retreat with her riches sacked upon her head. On the left side of the chest the story continues with Saka the Lord of the Dewas offering the Queen a lift upon an ox drawn cart. The right side of the chest depicts the pregnant Queen at her destination of refuge discussing her predicament with her long lost brother who offers protection in the birth of her child, Prince Mahajanaka. The elaborate high relief thayo lacquer is molded and modeled of a putty of lacquer sap mixed with clay, saw-dust, or ash. The interior and back are lacquered red. Provenance: From a residence designed by Kalef Alaton. East & Orient Company, Dallas. Private collection, Texas. Lark Mason...
