French, Antique Bronze Sculpture of Aberdeen Angus Bull by Isidore Bonheur
Located in Shippensburg, PA
ISIDORE JULES BONHEUR French, 1827-1901 Taureau Aberdeen-Angus" (Standing Aberdeen-Angus Bull) Patinated sand-cast bronze Signed to base "I. BONHEUR" Item # 211HDB17Z An exquisite and very rare casting of an Aberdeen-Angus bull, an unusual and distinctive breed of cattle from Scotland, this sculpture by Isidore Jules Bonheur is almost without a doubt cast by the foundry of his brother-in-law Hippolyte Peyrol and a rather early model as well in light of the distinctive construction method. In her text on the selection of 46 animal bronzes in the collection of the Georgia Museum of Art, Eleanor Luciano notes regarding this model that "Bonheur is never recorded to have been to Scotland, where he would have seen this unusual breed. Rosa Bonheur painted in Scotland, and its seems likely that Isidore would have drawn the idea for this bull either from one of her sketches or from an agricultural show in France. The animal's rich mane and strong modeling make this one of the most successful." Notable is the very fine surface patination which exhibits a glassy finish with a complex range of colors presenting in the body of the bull, overall being medium brown but augmented with an underlying reddish hue against auburn highlights. The base is signed "I. BONHEUR" in the typical manner. Museum Collections: * National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, acc. no. 2006.128.3 * Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia...

Limited Edition Bronze Sculpture Entitled "Turning Arab" by Steve Winterburn
By Steve Winterburn
Located in London, GB
A very well modelled study of an Arab horse in full motion turning to his right, the bronze with good rich brown colour and fine hand chased detail, raised on a stepped oval black marble base, signed S Winterburn and numbered 1 of 6 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION height: 41 cm width: 52 cm Condition: As New Condition Circa: 2010 Materials: bronze & marble SKU: 7631 ABOUT Steve Winterburn Steve Winterburn (born 1959, Coventry) is a self-taught artist whose creative development has been fuelled by his conviction, immense energy and curiosity. Possessing an innate comprehension of engineering and design enables him to explore his passion for challenge and experimentation. Steve began teaching himself to sculpt in 1994. With the progression of his sculpting an ambition emerged to personally shape each piece of his work from concept to completion. He had entrusted the casting of his earlier bronzes to the established foundries. But the delays in delivering his work became frustrating and he was disillusioned by the changes that resulted from not handling the finishing stages himself. In 2002 Steve moved to Yorkshire, in the north of England, and began converting the vast workshop next to his house into the current 9 room studio & foundry. It was here he started to experiment in order to gain an understanding of the entire process that is traditionally a closely guarded secret handed down between foundry men. The challenges included mastering mould making skills and the lost wax impression of the moulds from which a one off ceramic mould is made ready for the bronze pouring. Expanding his expertise with chasing the bronze, his ability to hand work the malleable surface and with the patina (colours). These stages are normally undertaken by a succession of different people, each skilled in their particular phase of the evolving sculpture. Involvement with a diversity of initiatives has taken Steve to India, Peru, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Australia and Ethiopia, sculpting people and animals. Steve has regularly exhibited with Hickmet Fine Arts at the internationally acclaimed LAPADA Fine Art and Antiques Fairs ( the highly prestigious UK Antiques Federation) and twice with The Wildlife Arts Society at the Westminster Gallery where in 1998 he won the award for best 3 dimensional piece. He has exhibited twice at the Royal Academy in London. Projects include developing designs for two statues...

“Putto on Doe” Art Nouveau Bronze Sculpture by Charles Korschann
Located in Shippensburg, PA
CHARLES KORSCHANN Czech, 1872-1943 Putto Riding a Doe Medium-brown patinated bronze over an original marble base Signed "CH. KORRSCHANN." and sealed with foundry cachet for Louchet Item # 301LCJ14L A very fine lifetime casting of Charles Korschann's Putto Riding a Doe, the model is steeped in the elements of the Art Nouveau with a distinct celebration of the naturalistic. The putto grasps a simple harp in his hand while a loose garment bound in a belt encircling his waist billows in the unseen wind. The doe looks on with disinterest, unconcerned about its surroundings and almost at one with its rider. It is a carefully composed idealization of the natural world and the potential for harmony between man and beast. The casting is exquisite, typical of work from Louchet, and is finished in a medium-brown translucent patina. Charles Korschann Born in Brno, Monrovia in 1872 as Charles Korschmann, later dropping the "m" to appear less Germanic, he studied at the fine arts academies of Vienna, Berlin and Paris before finally establishing himself in Paris in 1894. He spent his entire career working in Paris, exhibiting at the 1900 Exposition Universelle where he was awarded a Bronze Medal and from 1894 through 1905 at the Société des Artistes Français. His work is very distinctive and immediately recognizable, a most important trait as an artist and a particular accomplishment in light of the output of his contemporaries. He was to sculpture what Alphonse Mucha was to graphics, both men originating from the same province in Czechoslovakia and having similar influences in Paris. It is rather fitting that he would execute a bust of Alphonse Mucha for the Museum of Brno in honor of his accomplishments. Artist Listings...

Sculpture the Tiger and the Bulldog, Aaron Hinojosa, 20th Century
Located in CRÉTEIL, FR
Magnificent sculpture named "the tiger with the bulldog" is a unique piece. Mixed technique, particularity of its creator, mastering the recycling of all materials at hand, always with an ecological concern, conveying messages on what he lived or wanted to denounce in his time. Period: 20th century Dimensions: Height: 39cm x width: 25cm x depth: 16cm. 24 carat leaf gilding This feline is not chosen by chance, the tiger is a strong symbol of vitality, unpredictability, strength but also of self-confidence. It also strongly symbolizes ambition and justice. On his head, like a cap, the face of the man with his eyes raised to the sky. On his back, like a backpack, the bulldog's head. The bulldog, with its massive, muscular, stocky body as well as a powerful jaw evokes strength. His strength, his tenacity, his willingness to fight stronger animals. This sculpture certainly found its inspiration in England, or Aaron Hinojosa, the first country where he stayed after leaving Mexico. Victorian...

Vintage, Mid-Century, Contemporary and Antique Animal Sculptures

Invite the untamed wonders of the animal kingdom into your home — and do so safely — with the antique, new and vintage animal sculptures available on 1stDibs.

Artists working in every medium from furniture design to jewelry to painting have found inspiration in wild animals over the years. For sculptors, three-dimensional animal renderings — both realistic and symbolic — crisscross history and continents. In as early as 210 B.C., intricately detailed terracotta horses guarded early Chinese tombs, while North America’s native Inuit tribes living in the ice-covered Arctic during the 1800’s wore small animal figurines carved from walrus ivory. Indeed, animal sculpture has a long history, and beginning in the 19th century, the art form started becoming not only fashionable but artistically validated — a trend that continues today. At home, animal sculptures — polished bronze rhinos crafted in the Art Deco style or ceramic dogs of the mid-century modern era — can introduce both playfulness and drama to your decor.

In the case of the frosted glass sculptures crafted by artisans at legendary French glassmaker Lalique, founded by jeweler and glass artist René Lalique, some animal sculptures are purely decorative. With their meticulously groomed horse manes and detailed contours of their parakeet feathers, these creatures want to be proudly displayed. Adding animal sculptures to your bookcases can draw attention to your covetable collection of vintage monographs, while side tables and wall shelving also make great habitats for these ornamental animal figurines.

Some sculptures, however, can find suitable nests in just about any corner of your space. Whimsical brass flamingos or the violent, realist bronze lions created by Parisian sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye are provocative and versatile pieces that can rest on windowsills or your desk. Otherwise, the brass cat shoehorns and bronze porcupine ashtrays designed by Viennese artist Walter Bosse are no longer roaming aimlessly throughout your living room, as they’ve found a purpose to serve.

Embark on your safari today and find a fascinating collection of vintage, modern and antique animal sculptures on 1stDibs.
