A vibrant Art Nouveau purple to clear intaglio cut Harrach vase with rare shaped 'cut-out' top outlining the higher buds. Depicting Flowering Lilies highlighted with gilding. This style of intaglio cut vase (with cut-out top) was taken by Harrach to the 1900 Paris exhibition. Very unusually this vase has stylised geometric cuts radiating from the base.
Harrach has been the backbone of Bohemian, and possibly European, glass for the last 300 years. It proudly celebrates its tri-centenary in 2012. Before Ludwig Moser was allowed to have his own Glassworks he, like almost everyone else in the region, bought his blanks from Harrach. In fact we will probably never know how much glass, supposedly made my other great glass makers of Europe, were in fact made and finished in the Harrach Glassworks. This model closely resembles the renowned Gui glassware service designed by Edmond Lachenal (1855 - c.1955), an esteemed ceramicist and painter. For this commission, Lachenal collaborated with the Daum glassworks and the Keller & Guérin manufactory in Lunéville for the faience components. This iconic Art Nouveau service is now housed in the Musée d’Orsay, following a donation by dealer Rispal in 2005.

Glassmaking is more than 4,000 years old. It is believed to have originated in Northern Mesopotamia, where carved glass objects were the result of a series of experiments led by potters or metalworkers. From there, the production of glass vases, bottles and other objects proliferated in Egypt under the reign of Thutmose III. Later, new glassmaking techniques took shape during the Hellenistic era, and glassblowing was invented in contemporary Israel. Then, on the island of Murano in Venice, Italy, modern art glass as we know it came to be.
