Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS
The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.
Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.
Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer.
Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.
The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by legendary manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.
As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.
Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

This extremely rare large bowl was among the first designs Liskova produced fo rthe world-famous company of Moser, founded in 1857. The sculptural, organically curving walls recall pre-war designs produced during the late 1920s by Heinrich Hussmann, but are more rounded and flowing, recalling the liquid nature of molten glass.
The vibrant, tonal green glass used is unique to Moser and is known as 'Beryl.' Introduced by Moser at an exhibition in Hradec Králové in 1925, it heralded the introduction of a series of different brightly coloured glass made using 'rare earths' such as a neodymium and praseodymium. Considered a hallmark colour, it is still used today.
Other examples from this range can be found in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague and in the Moser museum.

A vintage, 1950's milk glass covered candy dish by Westmoreland, in the Argonaut pattern, having lovely garlands of shells, beading, dolphin feet and a shell top handle.
First made by Westmoreland in the 1920s in the United States, milk glass was the most remarkable and prolific product the company manufactured. In fact, they were one of the top producers of fine quality milk glass in the United States, according to the Collector's Encyclopedia of Milk Glass by Betty and Bill Newbound. The pattern for this eclectic lidded milk glass bowl, #1048, was based on the original Dauphins pattern by Portieux Vallerysthal which debuted in 1908. Westmoreland copied the design and made their own mould calling the production a “Faithful Reproduction of a Classic Design". From what I understand, over 20 colors were produced in this pattern beginning in the late 1950s all the way through 1984; milk glass was discontinued in 1963. The pattern consists of raised seashells, beaded lip and a stylized dolphin footed tripod base; an Argonaut shell serves as the lid’s handle. It measures 7” high with the lid on; lid off 3½”; 6” lip diameter; tripod base width 6”. It weighs a hefty 2 lbs. 9 oz.. Color is snowy white milk glass that has some opalescent hues depending on light casting; medium is pressed moulded glass. Overall in excellent condition with minimal wear. Interior lid has the mark Westmoreland used from 1940 to 1980. A fine and stylish mid-century unusual Italian, Murano glass bird in cased colored glass . The bird stands raised on a tall clear glass ribbed round base with orange and mottled brown cased glass body and neck, the neck with run down clear glass overlay containing silver foil aventurine. The bird has blue glass wings and yellow glass beak and tail. The chest of the bird is decorated with small scattered colored jewel like glass elements applied in relief. The bird is not marked.
