Antique Solid Silver Pair of Georgian Large Ladles, Sutherland Crest 1784/5
Located in London, GB
We are delighted to have acquired and be able to offer this pair of solid silver Georgian ladles, one made by Thomas Northcote & the other George Smith, London 1784/5. The pair is crafted with a classic minimalist Georgian design allowing for the large proportions and quality to aptly present its unembellished beauty. An additional feature of this pair is the rare 'Incuse' duty hallmark present on the rear side of the ladle's handles. This mark was only used during the short span of 1784-5 resulting in such marks being collectable in their own rights. Noteworthy crests are present on the ends of the handle with those bearing the crest of the Sutherland clan. The crest presents a 'wolf passant collared and chained' with the Order of the Garter surrounding it, 'Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense' and a coronet at the top. The pair were eventually discovered at Dunrobin Castle which is situated in Sutherland (Highland area of Scottland), and was/is a very ornate and extravagant castle that is still standing today. During the period these ladles were made, the 1st Duke of Sutherland, George Granville Leveson-Gower's ownerships of extensive land towards the latter part of his life eventually resulted in him being one of the wealthiest individuals in Britain to such an extent that titles and speculation such as "The Leviathan...
