1875 Map of the United States, Antique U.S. Railroad Map

About the Item

This decoratively framed railroad map of the United States was published circa 1875. The map itself was published by Warner and Beers, and it originally resided in H.H. Lloyd & Company’s “Atlas of the United States.” With extreme detail, this map shows the extent of the railroad system in the country, rivers, and major cities in each state. The custom windowpane frame further locates eight major cities in black paint. In 1875, the United States was in the midst of the Golden Age of railroads. The recent Civil War proved how important railroads were for quick transportation and the Industrial Revolution ensured their success for both goods transportation and travel. In 1869, the final spike was driven into the Union Pacific Railroad, making it the nation’s first transcontinental railroad finally linking the two coasts. The transcontinental railroad can be seen on this map stretching across the country and connecting the eastern railway system to the western. By 1875, the eastern railway system had long been in effect, playing a role in economics, politics, and war. As seen here, most of that area is littered with railroads compared to the west. Warner & Beers Publishers produced the map and it was then included in the “Atlas of the United States” published, in turn, by H.H. Lloyd & Company. The map would have folded out from the atlas and the page numbers are still visible at the top left and right margins. H.H. Lloyd & Co. (1860-1890) often worked closely with Warner and Beers to produce highly detailed and accurate maps. The company began production shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War. Their maps were so highly regarded that military generals even used them to form battle strategies during the conflict. With colorful state borders, named mountain ranges, and cities, this map would provide much more information than simple railroad tracks to the 1875 traveler. Condition: Overall very good condition considering age and use. The map is beginning to split where the two sheets were originally pasted together, but has been stabilized. Some scattered stains, as expected with use. The colors are still vibrant and there is no loss to the sheets. The map is framed in a custom rustic window pane frame with painted details.

This is a 1835 map of “The United States from the Latest Authorities” by Ezra Strong. A hand-colored engraved wall map of the eastern half of the United States, this map has a large inset of the "Oregon District" and several engraved city views and two portraits. The primary map extends to Mexico Texas and the Missouri Territory, showing the course of the Missouri River to Ft. Mandan and Old Ft. Mandan, and noting many forts along the river. The territories to the east of Missouri Territory are separately delineated as Sioux District and Huron District. The western details of the map are very good for a map of this time period, with many Native American settlements, villages, forts and other details noted. The map is bordered with vignettes of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Hartford, Cincinnati, and Baltimore. Each vignette notes the date settled, primary settler, and the population as of 1830. Two portraits of LaFayette and George Washington are presented in full length with related biographical information.
