A large and impressive Poole Pottery limited edition twin handled loving mug commemorating the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 1977 by renowned potter Guy Sydenham (British, 1916-2005).
Guy Sydenham joined Poole Pottery in 1931 and completed a seven year apprenticeship. He was a master potter for more than 50 years and was renowned for the original work he created in the Poole Pottery Studio in the 1960’s and 1970’s. He worked as head of the ‘making department’ at Poole Pottery resigning in 1977 possibly making this commemorative one his last important works.
This stylish twin handled stoneware mug (as it was called!) stands raised on a wide round base the rim carved with the words THE QUEENS SILVER JUBILEE 1952 – 1977. The piece has a narrow stem and a wide round cup shaped top with finely formed and elegant handles applied to either side. The is mounted with a relief molded medallion with a Lion, Unicorn and Crown and initials E II R. Good original antique condition. Presents well. Strong, sturdy, stable, and structurally sound. Nicely aged mellow warm patina. Wear consistent with age and indicative of use, including scattered losses to the paint, old repairs and touchups throughout, and various other antique character marks that add to the overall display, authenticity, and rustic old world charm.

John Galliano
Known for introducing rich theatricality and memorable fashion spectacles to the runway, John Galliano has enjoyed a singular career. The audacious British designer has garnered universal acclaim for genre-breaking collections not only at his eponymous label but also for Givenchy and Christian Dior. From his embroidered absinthe-green Oscars gown for actress Nicole Kidman to the iconic sleeveless newspaper-print dress that Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw made famous, Galliano’s intricate and multifaceted work is reliably newsworthy, drawing on history as often as it embodies a fresh and forward-looking sensibility, and over the years the designer has helped shape an ever-broadening new legion of enthusiasts for Parisian couture.Born in Gibraltar but raised in South London by strict Roman Catholic working-class parents, Galliano attended the all-boys Church of England grammar school, where his flamboyance and interest in art attracted the attention of bullies. Eventually, Galliano ended up at the prestigious design and art school Central Saint Martins College (then called Saint Martin’s School of Art), where fellow British designers Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen also trained.Galliano flourished at Central Saint Martins.
