The 1992 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXV Olympiad, were held in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, from 25 July to 9 August 1992. Commonly referred to as Barcelona '92, these games were notable for being the last Summer and Winter Olympics to be held in the same year, as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided thereafter to alternate the events in separate even-numbered years, starting in 1994. This was a pivotal moment in Olympic history, as the Barcelona Games marked the first Summer Olympics held in the post-Cold War era and were free from the boycotts that had plagued previous events, a situation not seen since the 1972 Munich Olympics.
Barcelona '92 is widely regarded as one of the most successful Olympic Games, contributing significantly to the modernization and global image of the city. It was also a Games of many firsts: the debut of the "Dream Team" in basketball, which featured NBA players like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird, and the reintegration of South Africa into the international sports community after a 32-year ban due to apartheid. The participation of a unified German team following the reunification of East and West Germany, and the absence of the Soviet Union (though its former republics competed as the Unified Team), further emphasized the geopolitical shifts of the time.
The official mascot for the 1992 Barcelona Games was *Cobi*, a stylized sheepdog designed by Catalan artist and designer Javier Mariscal. Mariscal, already a significant figure in contemporary design, was known for his eclectic and playful style, often blending comic art with a modernist sensibility. The striking acorn and leaf motifs in the handcrafted, molded borders of the door too are very stylish features to enjoy. Over the decades the gilding has slightly warn off, which has created a marvelous patina. Presented is “Lloyd's New Map of the United States, the Canadas and New Brunswick, From the latest Surveys, Showing Every Railroad & Station Finished to June 1863, and the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts.” A large, Civil War-era hanging map of the United States and adjacent territories, this map covers the area from the Atlantic Ocean and extends as far west as the 103 meridian, to “Dacotah,” Nebraska, Kansas, "Indian Territory," and Texas. The southern continuation of Florida is shown in an inset map along the right margin. This map was published by J. T. Lloyd, in New York, in 1863. According to the publisher’s marking at lower right, this map was originally issued in two states: "in Sheets, Colored" for 50 cents, and "Varnished nicely, with Rollers" for $1.
Throughout the map, the counties are colored and the towns and cities well labeled. A reference key in the bottom margin provides symbols for railroads, turnpikes and wagon roads, state capitals, cities and towns, and village post offices. As emphasized in the map’s title, this map is especially notable for the countless railway lines and stations depicted, with distances noted between points, listing “every railroad and finished station to June 1863.” Additionally, two shipping agents and their routes are drawn out of New York City. The map includes details of the steamship routes into New York and Philadelphia from Liverpool and on to California and Oregon via an overland Nicaraguan trek, presumably to assist gold rush emigrants.
This expansive and impressive map depicts the eastern half of the United States in the third year of the Civil War. In order not to recognize the legitimacy of the Confederate States of America, each state is shown in the same manner as the Union states. The only indication that the American Civil War was in progress when this map was published is a printed notice that Gideon Wells, Secretary of the Navy, wishes to acquire a quote on 100 copies of Lloyd’s Mississippi River map...

An uncommon aquatint work, illustrating a regency excursion to the Low Countries. Egerton was a humorous designer and social satirist active in London between 1820 and 1829, who supplied drawings to members of the print trade (including the Hunts and Pyall) for engraving. For this project he begins his tour at Ostend, where he was stuck for a day as it was a Sunday. He took time to describe the people's custom-house hotel and the 'Purgatory Gate' attached to the church (destroyed in a fire later in the nineteenth century) before traveling the next day by 'Great Coach' and barge to Ghent, observing the 'Belgic Military' various 'Diligences' and peasant costumes before continuing onto Brussels. Here he examined the Market Pavilion of the Prince of Orange before traveling on the next leg of the journey, which takes the artist once more to Ghent, where he describes and illustrates the Exchange. Egerton then returns to Brussels to view the Palace of Schoonenberg and then on to the main reason for his excursion: a trip to Waterloo, taking in all the main sites of the battle, including graves and monuments. Michael Egerton flourished between 1821 and 1828 and produced a number of caricatures, mainly of social comedy, sporting scenes, and jokes on the weather; almost all his work was engraved by George Hunt. OCLC records six copies in North America at Harvard Yale New York Public Library, Brown Claremont College, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
