Solid Burmese Teak Table, Designed by Hans Wegner, 1950s

About the Item

A solid teak table designed by Hans Wegner, in the late-1950s, and made by Master Cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in the early-1960s. As this design was made to order piece, only a small number were ever produced making this table rare, especially in this condition. The design of the table is brilliantly refined and self-assured. The table top is an uninterrupted board of solid Burmese teak, the proportions of which are aesthetically perfect. Being solid wood the table top has great strength despite being relatively slender in comparison to its large size. Similarly, the four tapered legs are also granted a fantastic slimness thanks to being solid hardwood. The only none wood feature of the table’s construction are the eight white metal brackets which fasten the legs to the table top. The shape of the metal brackets and the way in which the wood stretchers (between the legs) extend beyond the table’s top is reminiscent of East-Asian architecture. A fantastic colour and grain can be found on every aspect of the table. A version of the table in untreated oak was exhibited by Hansen at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition, 1960, where Wegner's room alone was said to 'make the visit worth one's while.'
