A divine whiteness reverberates with vibrant luster on the maphorion of the present Virgin. The palpable iridescence that structures the thin rosaceous garment, woven with the same fresh light, produces a slight rustle when she takes her hands off. The Madonna in fact takes a prayerful pose, opening her palms to underline her fervent ecstatic intention; the white neck is rendered with perishable fullness of pigments, like the hands, perfectly alive, and the very shiny eyes. With fine shrewdness the artist of the present styles the Virgin's hair with thin white ribbons, exacerbating the purity. An evocative light falls gently on the bust, a materialized sign of divine glory.
The present can be traced back to the late Mannerist climate that prevailed in the capital after the emanation of the Tridentine council (1545-1563). The late Mannerist licenses that can still be seen there, such as the intense lyricism in the stylistic code adopted by the artist, are innervated in the new basic catechetical intent, which at the end of the century produced a certain figurative rigorism. The present, however, still responds to that extraordinary Roman dynamism that raised the capital to a bulwark for the entire mannerist lesson, matched only by a second artistic center, the Florentine one. The engaging carriage of the Virgin reflects the contemporary examples of Giuseppe Valeriano (1542-1596), a Jesuit painter, returning in the Marriage of the Virgin of the Roman Church of Jesus, as well as in the Madonna of Sorrows in the Recanati Altarpiece, equal ardor. Pair of 19th Century Nature Morte Hunt Trophy Paintings

Nature morte (French for “still life”) paintings first became popular in the Netherlands in the 16th century. Assemblies of flowers, fruit, and dead game were the main subject matters, and hundreds of artists from Western Europe would eventually participate in the genre. French artists such as Jean-Baptiste Oudry painted some exquisite scenes, depictions of hunt motifs including game and dogs. These subjects remained highly popular and were used in hunt lodges throughout France. The pair of paintings seen here are very well done 19th century examples of such hunt scenes, each one measuring over 57 inches wide.
Both of our paintings depict hunting trophies displayed on an outdoor veranda. The balcony is elaborately styled with cavetto molding, volute scrolls, and a shaped cartouche beneath a bulbous gadrooned finial. Both paintings contain half of the cartouche and most of the finial, as if they were a continuous panoramic scene, complete with a blue sky and large trees in the background
The left painting features three felled birds piled on top of a deer carcass, with fruit scattered around them. Beneath the trophies is a coiled horn with a red tassel tied to it. A similar scene can be found on the right painting, with three birds displayed on the edge of the balcony. The birds lie on top of a pale green fabric with tassels that has been loosely folded. Under the textile is a hunting rifle and another horn. A garland of fruit is draped across the rifle’s stock, rising onto the balcony.

Title: Wati Kutjara
An important aboriginal dreamtime story from the Western Australia (the song line is also known as Two Men Dreaming), the narrative is about two young lizard-men travelling all over the Western Desert. They covered a vast landscape from Kimberley in the north to Southern Australia. The two brothers often took the form of wind and left songs in their epic journey to enlighten the people they encountered with rituals and knowledge. As magical ancestral beings, they destroyed evil spirits and created sacred objects across all over the Western Dessert.

Yannima Tommy Watson was a celebrated Pitjantjatara artist, born around 1935 in the desert west of Irrunytju in Western Australia. Tommy was a Law man of Karima skin group, and his traditional names were Yannima and Pikarli relate to specific sites near his birthplace at Anumarapiti, west of Irrunytju.
As a young man Tommy learned the bush skills of hunting and gathering, living off the land. In these years his physical and spiritual knowledge of the land was deeply embedded in his life.
Tommy Watson first met white people at Ernabella Mission in the 1940s. He then spent decades working as a stockman and laborer on cattle stations. Not until 2001 when he was in his mid 60s, did Tommy Watson pick up a paint brush and painted his first picture at Irrunytju art center established by a small group of artists.
Watson's work became quickly recognized for his powerful use of colors and his mesmerizing creation of energetic movement. He exhibited in Alice Springs at Desert Mob and as a finalist at the Telstra NATSIAA Art Awards in Darwin. With his work becoming highly collectable, Tommy soon entered into an exclusive representation agreement with Jon Ioannou of Agathon Gallery. This arrangement marked the start of a second phase of Tommy's career and saw the creation of a large body of outstanding artworks which were to further propel Tommy into the upper echelons of Australian indigenous artists. This painting was created toward the end of that phase.

"Manio Annio Curio Dentato receives the ambassadors of the Samnites", around 1740
The work in question depicts the scene of and was made by the famous italian painter Pietro Domenico Ollivero. The oval canvas shows on the back the card of the Galleria Caretto in Turin (Italy) with the authentic 1965 Giorgio Caretto. The work was also published in "I Piaceri e le grazie" by Arabella Cifani and Franco Monetti in 1993.
The subject refers to the history of Rome and an episode narrated by the historian Valerio Massimo.
Manius Curius Dentatus (330 BC - 270 BC), one of the great Romans of the 3rd century B.C. was a consul in ancient Rome, known for ending the Samnite Wars. Elected consul in 290 BC. along with Publio Cornelio Rufino, in the same year he fought and won the Third War against the Samnites and their allies, thus ending a conflict that had lasted for 49 years. He definitively subdued the Sabines and the Greek army of Pyrrhus in the battle of Benevento. He represented the ideal prototype of ancient Roman for the generations that followed in that he avoided public honours; Cato the censor, who collected his sayings, placed him among the great figures of universal history. For centuries after his death (in 270 B.C. while overseeing the construction of the second aqueduct in Rome) his military exploits were recounted and his moral rectitude was praised as an example for all the Romans. Ollivero, in the cultured choice of the episode, illustrates the moment when Manio Curio Dentato is found in his home, characterized by Roman walls, sitting by the fire, on a rustic bench while eating his meal in a "ligneo catillo" (wooden basin...
