A contemporary statement piece crafted in the shape of a Maltese cross in solid 18 karats of textured yellow gold. Is suited at the reverse with a horizontal hinged pin bar, with a lock. This can be used also as a pendant to hang into a chain.
Is mounted in the center, with one Mabe white pearl of 21.5 mm and four spiky elements carved from natural translucent white quartz with a combined weight of 28 carats.
The scimitar shaped rays are accented with 4 calibrated marquise cuts diamonds symmetrically placed, 0.40 carats, F/G color, VS-2 clarity.
Although this design had already been used for more than 2000 years since ancient times, fashion and jewelry houses such as Verdura, Channel and Bvlgari integrated this very popular model into their designs. Being since then an icon of high fashion. One of the most iconic pieces of jewelry depicting a Maltese cross, was designed by Fulco Di Verdura (1899-1978) in 1920, when he created the iconic Maltese cross cuff bracelet for his friend Coco Chanel.

A fabulous Art Deco ‘Un Cercle’ clip brooch by Van Cleef and Arpels c.1931, the brooch of open circular form set throughout with brilliant cut diamonds, embellished to each side with baguette diamonds and to the centre front with an angular geometric motif channel set with baguette and brilliant cut diamonds, the lower half with cut out details adding to the contrast between the curved and straight edges, all in platinum with a hinged opening, the top right quarter folding forwards to allow the brooch to be clipped in place. This is an iconic VCA design that has featured in books and exhibitions on the jewellery of this prestigious Maison. An archival advert for ‘Un Cercle’ shows how versatile the clip is, the clever mechanism allowing it to be pinned easily to hats, clothing and even an evening bag. Anywhere you need a touch of pure glamour, pin the ‘Circle’ and it is instantly elevated.

Directors Notes
The names of Jean and Robert Rubel are relatively unknown today but during the 1920s and 30s they ran one of the most important jewellery workshops in Paris. Responsible for creating many beautiful and iconic jewels of the period, predominantly for Van Cleef & Arpels, the firm was one of the ‘unsung heroes’ of French haute joaillerie in the first half of the 20th Century. Before emigrating from Hungary to France, the brothers had run a successful jewellery shop in their native Budapest. They settled in Paris and opened a workshop at 22 rue Vivienne, not far from the Place Vendôme, in 1915. They gradually built their business and reputation for fine quality craftsmanship and within ten years they were working for some of the most prestigious Parisian jewellers. One such client was Van Cleef & Arpels who began working with Rubel Frères sometime around 1923 and the two firms would go on to form a close working relationship that would last for twenty years. They remained in Paris, quietly creating their masterpieces for sale in the Place Vendome boutiques, until 1939. It was then that they were offered the opportunity to move to America where Van Cleef & Arpels had recently opened offices. Two main transitional cut (old mine) diamonds 0.70ct. Mix of old mine and rose cut diamonds in an 18 carat yellow gold with “silver Set” channel setting , approx 1 ct total. G/H/I, VS2-SI2.
Total diamond weight: approx 1.7carats
Setting diamonds in gold with a thin layer of silver, “silver set”, was a technique used in the Georgian/Victorian/Art Nouveau period as white coloured gold and platinum were not yet available. A very thin layer of silver was applied to the gold, on which the diamonds were set, to show them off to their best advantage (as the yellow would reflect and distort the white colour of the diamonds).
The Art Nouveau period was a short lived but worldwide movement which reached its peak at the end of the 19th Century and the first decade of the 20th Century. It had its roots in the Pre Raphaelite and Arts and Crafts movements in Britain in the 1860’s. Artists, such as William Morris, took their inspiration from the flora and fauna of nature and rejected the mass industrialisation and mechanisation of the Victorian age.
Art Nouveau continued with this theme and has a distinctive appearance with soft, curved shapes and lines and often depicted natural designs such as flowers, birds and the female form. Before the Art Nouveau period, the emphasis had been to design pieces with an emphasis on gem stones, diamonds, rubies emeralds etc. However, during the Art Nouveau period, jewellers adopted the idea of using other semi–precious stones “from nature” such as agate, garnet opal, moonstone, aquamarine and experimented with a wide variety of new techniques e.g. enamelling.
The “New Art” style became a worldwide movement encompassing all disciplines of the arts, and world class artists as far afield as Gaudi with his “modernisme” architecture in Spain, Louis Comfort Tiffany in New York with objects, Galle Glass in France and the Liberty & Co Archibald Knox designs in Britain, Jugendstil in Northern Europe and Faberge in Russia.
The movement flared brightly but briefly and by 1910 it was already going out of style to be replaced by Art Deco.
