Dalhoff's workshops. He also attended the Royal Danish Academy of Arts where he was influenced by Gustav Friedrich Hersch. In 1836, he went on a long journey abroad, working in some of the leading goldsmiths in Germany and Paris. He established his own goldsmith in Gothersgade, Copenhagen when he returned to Denmark in 1841. He immediately won the attention of the royal family and the king Christian VIII charged him with executing all Danish orders with title of royal court and order jeweler. Michelsen was the only Danish goldsmith who was represented at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855. The company of A. Michelsen, was a leading Danish jeweler founded in 1841 by Anton Michelsen in Copenhagen. It was responsible for executing all Danish royal orders and was absorbed by the Georg Jensen company in 1985. Eigil Jensen Eigil Jensen was born in the Danish town of Aalborg in 1917. He liked drawing and was originally drawn towards graphic design, but was unable to find an apprenticeship. Instead, a goldsmith in Aalborg was looking for an apprentice who could draw. He soon showed an aptitude for his work and finished his apprenticeship in 1938. Jensen then sought new challenges and was employed by Hans Hansen in Kolding, Hans Hansen silversmith had an international reputation by this time. After five years at Hans Hansen Jensen sent his CV to A. Michelsen in Copenhagen, where he worked for the next forty years until his retirement in 1985. After just four years he became the foreman for the goldsmith workshop, he simultaneously studied and became a qualified gemologist and diamond expert. At Michelsen Eigil Jensen fulfilled many different design assignments, including jewelry, Christmas spoons, and hollowware. He also executed many commission orders; mayoral chains, church silver and silverware for Crown Prince Margrethe and Prince Henrik's as well as Princess Benedikte and Prince Richard...

Today the brand keeps its leading position in the luxury jewelry strong. A balanced mixture of traditions and creativity has been making Boucheron jewelry highly desirable throughout the time. For instance, one of the most recent pieces, a necklace from Goutte de Ciel (Drop of Sky) collection. It’s a white gold and diamond necklace that features an exquisite ice-blue pendant made of Aerogel. It’s a material that was previously only used by NASA. The idea behind the piece was to capture the purity of the sky and translate it into a jewelry piece. As to vintage Boucheron jewelry, it definitely carries the influence of French Classicism era. Being raised by the family of drapers, Frédéric Boucheron, the Maison’s founder, brought the pliancy of silk and laces into the goldsmith process. That concept is easy to see in the airy looking Boucheron Bombé...

Liuba Wolf 1970 Concretism Sculptural Pendant Necklace Chain In 18Kt Yellow Gold

This fantastic piece is a one of a kind and has been crafted with concretism art patterns in solid rich yellow of of 18 karats with textured surfaces. The main pendant is completely chiseled with irregular hammered finishes and sharp edges It is fitted with a removable chain in suite, which is composed of twenty six geometric links of different lenght and a security hook lock. Weight: 108.52 Grams, (69.57 Dwt). Size: The lenght of the chain is 25 Inches, (63.5 Cm). Measurements: The main sculpture pendant is 55 mm by 71 mm by 10 mm (2.16 x 2.79 0.39 Inches). Hallmarks: Stamped with the designer artist name, the mark for the assay of the gold, the edition number and signed, "LIUBA .750 1/30 1/50". Edition: Brazil Sao Paulo 1/30 for the pendant and 1/50 for the geometric chain, the authorized edition was only of 30 and 50 pieces, respectively but the production was never completed and only the number 1 of each one was made. Both pieces are stamped with the edition numbers. Liuba Wolf She born as Liuba Boyadjieva in Sofia Bulgaria in 1923. She was raised in a privileged, cultivated milieu by a writer mother and industrialist father who (he also played the violin) instilled in her a taste for music. The artist received a humanistic education, studying Greek and Latin and mastering the piano. When her family moved to Geneva, she attended art school and developed a special interest in sculpture. Later, she studied in Zurich under Germaine Richier (1904-1958), a renowned artist of the Paris School. This contact with Germaine Richier had a strong impact on Liuba Boyadjieva’s education as a modern sculpture and left a deep imprint on her understanding of sculpture. In those years, in Zurich, she was also in contact with a group of important artists, like, among others, Marino Marini and Arthur Honnegger. At the end of the war, when Richier reopened her atelier in Paris, Liuba moved to the French capital and continued her studies with her teacher until 1949. Her social circle in France included Zadkine, Viera da Silva, Alberto Magnelli, among others. She traveled often throughout Europe and visited the most important museums. Liuba Boyadjieva came to Brazil, married the industrialist and collector Ernesto Wolf in 1958, and lived between São Paulo and Paris, keeping studios in both cities. She became a naturalized Brazilian citizen. She developed a personal way of working her sculptures and achieved full artistic maturity. In the 1960s and 1970s, Liuba Wolf exhibited her work in several cities around the world and achieved international recognition. In 2001, on the occasion of her exhibition at Achim Moeller Fine Art. Rizzoli (New York) published a book celebrating Wolf’s art and featuring Sam Hunter’s essay “Liuba: At the Edge of Abstraction.” Among the central features of Liuba Wolf’s work are her expressive power, the surface’s play between the smooth and the textured, and rusticity. Verticality is another key characteristic, as well as the gesturalism of the forms. Figurative early on in her career, Wolf’s works became abstracted starting in the 1950s, but there always remained an archaic memory that referred back to primitive archetypes. Some critics, like Sam Hunter, see in those shapes a reference to pre-Columbian realities. Another highlight is a degree of surrealism in Wolf’s abstraction, yet critics mostly underscore the fact that she situated her sculptures at the border between abstraction and figuration, as well as the force of imagination in the conception of the works. On more than one occasion Liuba Wolf said that her forms are born from the subconscious. For her, they are “bugs”, animals, but they can also be plants or roots. They could be totems, in a symbiosis between the animal and the plant worlds, according to another observer, artist Emmanoel Araújo. Liuba Wolf stated once in an interview that her work “finds inspiration in natural shapes.” The exhibition at the Lasar Segall...

1950sRobertGoosensStyle CastOakLeafTalisman BaroqueFauxPearls GoldChain Sautoir
Located in Chicago, IL
While contracted as an independent craftsman to create one-of-a-kind costume jewelry for French Masion Degorce from 1953 until it closed in 1957, Parisian goldsmith Robert Goosens (1927-2016) was initially commissioned by Gabriel "Coco" Chanel to craft one-of-a-kind Byzantine-style long decorative-chain necklaces with multiple charms made of metal and filigree-or-sculptural-prong-capped glass faux pearls, while she intended to layer many of them to accessorize her couture clothing for clients and herself. Relevant to the unclear designer of our vintage 9-pendant ribbed-chain sautoir with an unsigned gold-gilt silver barrel clasp and five unique kinds of intricately textured vermeil and baroque-faux-pearl charms, a similar lost-wax-cast center pendant with three-lobed-foliate prongs also in the shape of oak leaves can be seen in the book (p.28), Bijoux de Haute Couture: Collection Robert Goossens, by Gilles Plazy and Chantal Bizot published in Paris in 2000. The same year, that Chanel-signed pendant necklace was auctioned by Christie's in a lot including an unsigned long chain sautoir also attributed to Chanel. Further, another 1stDibs dealer currently has a $12,500 listing for an unsigned but book-published early-1950s faux-pearl sautoir for Chanel that also features intricate pinecone talismans like ours, but decorated with poured glass and crystals crafted by Maison Gripoix. When Chanel relaunched her post-war business ventures, Goosens soon became her favorite parurier before founding his eponymous Maison Goosens, whose venerable workshop later designed metal work for its own jewelry-and-furnishings brand Goosens Paris. Notably, Chanel did not add a brand signature to costume jewelry until the late 1950s, while some pieces prior to this by multiple paruriers are documented to lack any identification that Chanel was earlier known to stamp such as "France", "Made In France" and/or "Depose". Recently, a similar unsigned/unmarked longer chain sautoir with fewer filigree-and-pearl pendants that was believed to be by Robert Goosens for Chanel...

We are fortunate to know much of the world’s long and dazzling history of necklaces, as this type of jewelry was so treasured that it was frequently buried with its owners.

Lapis lazuli beads adorned necklaces unearthed from the royal graves at the ancient Iraqi civilization of Sumer, while the excavation of King Tut’s burial chamber revealed a sense of style that led to a frenzy of Art Deco designs, with artisans of the 1920s seeking to emulate the elegant work crafted by Ancient Egypt’s goldsmiths and jewelry makers.

In ancient times, pendant necklaces worn by royalty and nobles conferred wealth and prestige. Today, wearing jewelry is about personal expression: Luxury diamond necklaces exude confidence and can symbolize the celebratory nature of a deep romantic relationship, while paper-clip chain-link necklaces designed by the likes of goldsmith Faye Kim are firmly planted in the past as well as the present. Kim works exclusively with eco-friendly gold, and these fashionable, fun accessories owe to the design of 19th-century watch fobs.

For some, necklaces are thought of as being a solely feminine piece, but this widely loved accessory has been gender-neutral for eons. In fact, just as women rarely took to wearing a single necklace during the Renaissance, men of the era layered chains and valuable pendants atop their bejeweled clothing. In modern times, the free-spirited hippie and counterculture movements of the 1960s saw costume-jewelry designers celebrating self-expression through colorful multistrand necklaces and no shortage of beads, which were worn by anyone and everyone.

Even after all of these years, the necklace remains an irrefutable staple of any complete outfit. Although new trends in jewelry are constantly emerging, the glamour and beauty of the past continue to inform modern styles and designs. In a way, the cyclical history of the necklace differs little from its familiar looped form: The celebrated French jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels found much inspiration in King Tut, and, now, their Alhambra collection is a go-to for modern royals. Vintage necklaces designed by David Webb — whose work landed him on the cover of Vogue in 1950, two years after opening his Manhattan shop — were likely inspired by the ornamental styles of ancient Greece, Mesopotamia and Egypt
