21st Century Bronze Abstract Sculpture CORRESPONDANCE by Bernard Varvat, France
By Bernard Varvat
Located in Paris, FR
Mr. Bernard VARVAT has been exhibited in the the most famous collector's Gallery of Paris and is now available on 1stDibs in exclusivity. Seek the Monograph: « Au fil du temps Bernard Varvat sculptor », Editions Lelivredart, 2020. “My work is focused on the search for forms and two forms are at the base of this search, the triangle and the curve, playing their participation alone or in association. The translation of my emotions leads to an abstract work. Abstraction places us outside our habits of thought; we cannot appeal to our ability to recognize; we must only refer to our own experiences and allow ourselves to rediscover first sensations, emotions. To go further than the imitation of the forms we have in front of us is for me the true creation. Our capacity to perceive is much broader than we think; but we must devote attention to it and allow ourselves the freedom to look at the work as it is, to accept what it gives us to think, according to our personal journey – this is a parenthesis of truth.” Born in 1944 • Lives and works in Provence in Bouc-Bel-Air • Regional Delegate Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur of the Syndicat national des sculpteurs et plastic surgeons (SNSP) • Member and Director of the National Society of Fine Arts (SNBA) • ADAGP Sculpture Award – 2012 • 1st Prize of Sculpture of the Grand Prix d'Argenson, Paris – 2002...

Pair of Bronze Models of a Standing Bull and a Running Cow, circa 1890
By Isidore Jules Bonheur, Francois Auguste Hippolyte Peyrol 1
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A pair of large and finely patinated bronze models of a standing bull and a running cow after models by Isidor-Jules Bonheur, Cast on a Naturalistic Base. French, circa 1890. Signed 'I BONHEUR' and stamped 'PEYROL EDITEUR'. Bonheur was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon and his naturalistic depiction of farm animals, including cattle, was one of his most popular subjects. The bronze was cast by his brother-in-law, Hippolyte Peyrol, who ran one of the most successful art foundries in Paris at this time. Isidore-Jules Bonheur (1827-1901) was the son of the painter Raymond Bonheur and younger brother of Rosa Bonheur, the famous sculptor. He was born in Bordeaux and studied painting, at first with his father and then with the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, moving on to sculpture in 1848. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1848 with a painting and plaster study of the same subject ‘African horseman attacked by a lioness’. From then onwards, Bonheur exhibited regularly at the Salon as well as other exhibitions, winning medals in 1865 and 1869 together with the prized Gold Medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. He was awarded the Legion d’Honneur in 1895. Most of Bonheur’s casts were by his uncle by marriage, Hippolyte Peyrol, whose tiny foundry mark is often very difficult to find. Bonheur’s studies range from farm animals, bears and tigers in a very naturalistic vein to equestrian groups. Although noted primarily for his small groups he did complete two large scale commissions, one to his sister Rosa, at Fontainbleau and the other, two stone lions at the steps of the Royal...

Bambina in Bronzo Scultura Italiana Intitolata NIVES di Eugenio Pellini 1900
By Eugenio Pellini
Located in Milan, IT

Erratic L with 23ct Red Gold, amorphic optical glass sculpture by Anthony Scala
By Anthony Scala
Located in London, GB
'Erratic L with 23ct Red Gold' is a handblown and cut glass sculpture created by the British artist, Anthony Scala. The geological term 'erratic' refers to a stone or boulder that differs to its surrounding rock, that is believed to have been displaced and deposited by glacier movement. Differing from his Auri collection, Scala's aim was to produce a series of sculptures that are freer, amorphous and suggestive of movement. Striking in the singular, these really capture this concept en masse. With a career in glass now spanning over 20 years, Scala creates art works that can only be described as acts of precision. As equally beautiful as they are meticulously created and despite being a hugely skilled glass blower, it is with cold working that Scala excels. Initially qualified as an architectural model maker, it was during this time that Scala learnt many disciplines that would be equally relevant to and ultimately inform his practice today. His passion for glass was discovered however during an apprenticeship with Peter Layton at his studio at London Glassblowing. The beginning of a long standing association for him with this acclaimed studio. In 2005 at the age of 27, Scala won the prestigious 'Glass Sellers Award' (other recipients have included Alison Kinnard, Colin Reid, Richard Jackson...
