Summer Afternoon
Located in Hudson, NY
Listing is for UNFRAMED print. Inquire within for framing. Edition of 20. If the exhibition piece is sold or the customer orders a different print size, the photograph is produced upon purchase. Please allow two weeks for production. Shipping time depends on method of shipping. Price is subject to availability. The Robin Rice Gallery reserves the right to adjust this price depending on the current edition of the photograph. ABOUT: Brian Pearson’s search of quiet moments within the ever-increasing calamity of the modern world drives this new series of images. The medley of black and white images is split between the figurative and the architectural. The raw, candid quality in his imagery inspires a different sense of place and time in each photograph, creating a collection that demands the individual attention of the viewer with each melodic piece. In the invitational image, “Falling”, a shirtless man falls from a steep cliff above a dark, watery abyss within a dense forest. His limbs are relaxed as his torso twists away from the viewer, a curiously assured leap despite the unknowns of the rocky surface below. Because of the high-contrast nature of the black and white image, the man’s body becomes one of the only sources of light, literally highlighting this moment of airborne suspension. Pearson’s raw, intimate portraits are reminiscent of Bruce Weber, whom Pearson lists as an early inspiration for his innovative, at times controversial work during the Reagan Era. Another black and white image, “Roman in Tub”, centers on the exhausted figure of a man collapsed in a dark, outdoor tub...

ABOUT: In the hazy, warm New York summer, little is more refreshing than reclining on the beach in the mist of the icy ocean waves or enjoying a family trip to the country house. Each summer, Rice curates her favorite show, the Summertime Salon, which reminds us of this exact seasonal sentiment. The two, long walls of the gallery become mosaicked, top to bottom, side to side, in photographs that evoke all the preeminent feelings and memories of summer. Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece comes into fruition. This year is no exception. The show is a haven of what the Robin Rice Gallery stands for, a community of art and experience. As the largest annual exhibition, the Summertime Salon is carefully pieced together, the results are staggering. The works of the 53 gallery artists come together communally, reinforcing the overall sense of unity that the show creates as a whole. In knowing the photographs so fluently, Rice strategically places them together in a way that will enhance the individual stories contained in each. Details from one image flow from into the next, elevating every photograph in a distinctly unique way. This year’s invitational image, “Surf Club” by Silvia Lareo-Vasquez, features a woman in a vintage sun hat...

Another black and white image, “Roman in Tub”, centers on the exhausted figure of a man collapsed in a dark, outdoor tub, surrounded only by an endless field of wildflowers. Shot in upstate New York after a long summer’s day of chopping firewood, the man’s bare arms extend along the rim of the tub, his hands resting inches from pebbles on the ground beneath him. His downward gaze casts a shadow over the water on his shoulders, which glisten brightly from the summer sun. Lost in his world within the tub, Roman’s portrait captures Pearson’s affinity for the freedom and carelessness of a solitary man. Pearson’s enigmatic series of architectural images remind the viewer of the sparse geometry of Donald Judd's work, while retaining the romantic, organic components found in his figurative photographs. “Atlantic City...

N.Y. Still Life I
Located in Santa Monica, CA
Horst began his photography career in 1931 working for Paris Vogue. Shortly after he succeeded his friend and mentor, George Hoyningen-Huene, as head photographer of Vogue's photo studios. It was during the 1930's that Horst established his trademark style, which incorporated dramatic lighting and an unparalleled eye for grace that enabled Horst to create images that portray his subjects as emblems of elegance. In his portrait of Coco Chanel, one of his most famous images, he captures a woman who was rarely photographed, and creates a striking composition with her regal profile and the exquisite chair.
For sixty years, Horst photographed...

Photography, Drawings, Prints, Sculptures and Paintings for Sale

Whether growing your current fine art collection or taking the first steps on that journey, you will find an extensive range of original photography, drawings, prints, sculptures, paintings and more on 1stDibs.

Visual art is among the oldest forms of expression, and it has been evolving for centuries. Beautiful objects can provide a window to the past or insight into our current time. Art collecting enhances daily life through the presence of meaningful work. It displays an appreciation for culture, whether a print by Elizabeth Catlett channeling social change or a narrative quilt by Faith Ringgold.

Contemporary art has lured more initiates to collecting than almost any other category, with notable artists including Yayoi Kusama, Marc Chagall, Kehinde Wiley and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Navigating the waiting lists for the next Marlene Dumas, Jeff Koons or Jasper Johns has become competitive.

When you’re living with art, particularly as people more often work from home and enjoy their spaces, it’s important to choose art that resonates with you. While the richness of art with its many movements, styles and histories can be overwhelming, the key is to identify what is appealing and inspiring. Artwork can play with the surrounding color of a room, creating a layered approach. The dynamic shapes and sizes of sculptures can set different moods, such as a bronze by Miguel Guía on a mantel or an Alexander Calder mobile suspended over a table. A wall of art can evoke emotions in an interior while showing off your tastes and interests. A salon-style wall mixing eclectic pieces like landscape paintings with charcoal drawings is a unique way to transform a space and show off a collection.

For art meditating on the subconscious, investigate Surrealists like Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. Explore Pop art and its leading artists such as Andy Warhol, Rosalyn Drexler and Keith Haring for bright and bold colors. Not only did these artists question art itself, but also how we perceive society. Similarly, 20th-century photography and abstract painting reconsidered the intent of art.

Abstract Expressionists like Helen Frankenthaler and Lee Krasner and Color Field artists including Sam Gilliam broke from conventional ideas of painting, while Op artists such as Yaacov Agam embraced visual trickery and kinetic movement. Novel visuals are also integral to contemporary work influenced by street art, such as sculptures and prints by KAWS.

Realist portraiture is a global tradition reflecting on what makes us human. This is reflected in the work of Slim Aarons, an American photographer whose images are at once candid and polished and appeared in Holiday magazine and elsewhere. Innovative artists Mickalene Thomas and Kerry James Marshall are now offering new perspectives on the form.

Collecting art is a rewarding, lifelong pursuit that can help connect you with the creative ways historic, modern and contemporary artists have engaged with the world. For more tips on piecing together an art collection, see our guide to buying and displaying art.
