Oil on board, 62cm x 42cm, (70cm x 50cm framed). The picture is in good condition. Plummer trained at the Royal Academy Schools in the early 1950s, championed by Stanley Spencer and Sir Herbert Read, he was the recipient of the coveted Leverhulme Scholarship. In a mixed career which included illustration work for The National Trust, anatomical illustration for Guys Hospital and teaching, painting ran parallel to his commercial work. Plummer specialised in the medium of egg tempera, as well as oil painting, a technique little used since the frescos of the Renaissance, he often worked on a large scale, but in tremendous detail, combining Classical iconography and formal composition with visual exploration evocative of William Blake and...

"Abstract Sculpture, " Gerome Karmwoski, Wood Surrealist Expressionism
Located in New York, NY
Gerome L. Kamrowski (1914 - 2004) Abstract Sculpture Oil on wood 62 inches high Provenance: The artist's estate Gerome Kamrowski was born in Warren, Minnesota, on January 19, 1914. In 1932 he enrolled in the Saint Paul School of Art (now Minnesota Museum of American Art - MMAA), where he studied with Leroy Turner, and Cameron Booth. Both Turner and Booth had been students of Hans Hofmann, and were also associated with the Abstraction-Création group in Paris. It was from these peers that Kamrowski was introduced to a "kind of expressionist cubism." In 1933 Kamrowski was awarded a scholarship to the Art Students League, where he would study in New York under Hans Hofmann. Unfortunately, immigration problems had prevented Hofmann from assuming his post. Nevertheless, Kamrowski decided to remain in New York for a short time, to attend classes taught by George Grosz. After a few weeks, he returned to St. Paul, and found a position in the mural painting division of the Minnesota FAP/WPA (Works Progress Administration). In 1936 he contributed “Synthetic Cubist Style” frescoes in the Northrup Auditorium of the University of Minnesota. In 1937 Kamrowski went to Chicago to study under László Moholy-Nagy and Alexander Archipenko at the New Bauhaus (now Illinois Institute of Technology's Institute of Design). There he was exposed to new and interesting ideas regarding the role of nature in art and the "geometric basis of natural form". In 1938 Kamrowski received a Guggenheim fellowship to attend Hans Hofmann's summer school in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He then relocated to New York where he met William Baziotes. Together they shared a fascination in Surrealist automatic writing, and both artists explored its possibilities in their paintings. Kamrowski was particularly drawn to Surrealism's fundamental appeal of intuition over intellect. He was interested seeking a process that "binds all things together...a kind of cosmic rhythm". Throughout the late 1930s and early 1940s while living in New York, Kamrowski became an integral part of the emerging surrealists. In 1942, the artist Roberto Matta attempted to form a group of artists to investigate new applications for Surrealist methods. He invited Kamrowski, along with William Baziotes, Jackson Pollock, Peter Busa...

Dibujo a la manera de Velasquez (Drawing in the Manner of Velasquez)
Located in Palm Desert, CA
A drawing by Fernando Botero. "Dibujo a la Manera de Velasquez" is a portrait, charcoal and pastel on cardboard in an earth-tone palette by Latin American artist Fernando Botero. It is signed upper right, "Sobre Velazquez Botero -1-27-60 Para Rita. el recuerdo de uno payaso". Fernando Botero, best known for his voluptuously rotund human figures, was born in Medellín, Colombia on April 19, 1932. His father died when he was young, and he was raised by his mother, along with his two brothers. He attended a Jesuit school in Medellín and from the age of 12 to 14, he attended a matador training school. The bull fight became a recurring theme in Botero’s early work and while he was in his early teens, he sold his pictures of bull fights in front of the arena. By the time he was 16 years of age, Botero was working as an illustrator for the local magazine El Colombiano. He also began writing articles about art theory, one of which, entitled Picasso and Non-Conformity in Art, led to his expulsion from the Jesuit school for its endorsement of Cubism. One of Botero’s important early works, Woman Crying...

Photography, Drawings, Prints, Sculptures and Paintings for Sale

Whether growing your current fine art collection or taking the first steps on that journey, you will find an extensive range of original photography, drawings, prints, sculptures, paintings and more on 1stDibs.

Visual art is among the oldest forms of expression, and it has been evolving for centuries. Beautiful objects can provide a window to the past or insight into our current time. Art collecting enhances daily life through the presence of meaningful work. It displays an appreciation for culture, whether a print by Elizabeth Catlett channeling social change or a narrative quilt by Faith Ringgold.

Contemporary art has lured more initiates to collecting than almost any other category, with notable artists including Yayoi Kusama, Marc Chagall, Kehinde Wiley and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Navigating the waiting lists for the next Marlene Dumas, Jeff Koons or Jasper Johns has become competitive.

When you’re living with art, particularly as people more often work from home and enjoy their spaces, it’s important to choose art that resonates with you. While the richness of art with its many movements, styles and histories can be overwhelming, the key is to identify what is appealing and inspiring. Artwork can play with the surrounding color of a room, creating a layered approach. The dynamic shapes and sizes of sculptures can set different moods, such as a bronze by Miguel Guía on a mantel or an Alexander Calder mobile suspended over a table. A wall of art can evoke emotions in an interior while showing off your tastes and interests. A salon-style wall mixing eclectic pieces like landscape paintings with charcoal drawings is a unique way to transform a space and show off a collection.
