George Pyne (1800 - 1884)
Brasenose College Quadrangle
Watercolour
16 x 22 cm
Signed and dated to lower right
A well-executed watercolour of the quadrangle at Brasenose College, Oxford. Pyne expertly depicts the main gate with the Radcliffe Camera behind and the spire of the University Church of St Mary shrouded in a light mist. He also intriguingly captures the smaller details of the scene: a scholar in academic dress wandering around the periphery of the quad, the shadows and relief of a statue which no longer stands in the Old Court, the reflections in the old single-glazed windows. In doing so, he captures the unique charm of Brasenose College on this sunny day in the late 19th Century.
George Pyne was related to two founders of the Society of Painters in Watercolours – William Henry Pyne was his father, and John Varley his father-in-law. Pyne trained as an architectural draughtsman and lived in Oxford from the 1850s until his death in 1884, specialising in views of the city and its colleges. His Oxford pictures are both architecturally-minded and romantically creative, often combining intensely detailed depictions of college buildings with imagined pedestrian scenes.
Pyne was also noted for his views of Cambridge and Eton, and for his drawing manuals ‘A Rudimentary and Practical Treatise on Perspective for Beginners’ (1848) and ‘Practical Rules on Drawing for the Operative Builder, and Young Student in Architecture’ (1854); the latter texts offer an insight into his method of depicting architecture and its surroundings.

George Pyne
George Pyne was the elder son of William Henry Pyne — the publisher-artist behind the monumental History of the Royal Residences — and son-in-law of John Varley, two founders of the Society of Painters in Watercolours. Living in Oxford from the 1850s until his death, Pyne brought the hand of an architectural draughtsman to his views of Oxford, the works for which he is best known, but with an artist’s ability to represent the romance of old stone. Pyne’s views of Cambridge and Eton also contribute to his valuable and historical record of the period.

Claude Grahame Muncaster, RWS, ROI, RBA, SMA was the son of Oliver Hall RA. At the age of fifteen his career as a landscape painter began, and he soon took to the seas, spending the 1920s and 30s travelling the world with his sketchbook in a series of vessels. With the outbreak of war and he joined the RNVR training as a navigator. Having left school at fifteen his mathematics was very weak and it was a relief for all when his artistic talents meant he was recruited as a camofleur. A master of capturing seascapes he was therefore able to hide huge ships ‘in plain sight’ with clever disguises. After the war he painted for the Royal Family and was a frequent guest at Sandringham.
Claude Muncaster was a watercolourist known for his landscapes and maritime scenes. He was born Grahame Hall, the son of the Royal Academician Oliver Hall who taught his son to paint from an early age; Grahame first exhibited his work aged 15 and a few years later was showing at the RA. However, he adopted the name Claude Muncaster in 1922 to dissociate his career from that of his father.
Muncaster’s primary choice of subject matter came from a genuine love of the sea. He made several long-distance sea voyages, including one around the Horn...

Cupid Sleeping - 18th Century British watercolour by Richard Westall RA
By Richard Westall
Located in London, GB
RICHARD WESTALL, RA
(1765-1836)
Cupid Sleeping; from a poem of Mrs Robinson
- The Duchess of Devonshire Discovers the Sleeping Cupid
Watercolour on paper, oval
36 by 44.5 cm., 14 ¼ by 18 in.
(frame size 55 by 66 cm., 21 ¾ by 26 in.)
Exhibited:
London, Royal Academy, 1792, no.448.
Richard Westall was bon in Reepham, near Norwich. Initially apprenticed to a London silver engraving he began studying at the Royal Academy Schools from 1785 and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1784 and 1836. Westall became an Associate member of the Royal Academy in 1792 and a full member in 1794.
Westall painted in both oil and watercolour, his works being romantic and neoclassical in style. He contributing to both Boydell’s Shakespeare Gallery and Fuseli’s Milton Gallery and was also a prolific book illustrator of both fiction and poetry including works by Sir Walter Scott and Byron, whose portrait he also painted. For a time he was also art master to the young Princess Victoria.
This is probably Westall’s 1792 Royal Academy exhibit (no.448). The subject was inspired by the poem Cupid Sleeping by the poetess-actress Mary Darby Robinson, which had been published in the previous year. The poem was dedicated to Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire and the picture show the Duchess discovering the sleeping cupid who she then relieves of his bow and arrows. Mrs Robinson was not only the Duchess’s protégée but also the first public mistress of the Prince of Wales. William Nutter’s engraving of Westall’s picture was also dedicated to the Duchess of Devonshire.
Close in a woodbine's tangled shade,
The blooming god asleep was laid;
His brows with mossy roses crown'd;
His golden darts lay scatter'd round;
To shade his auburn, curled head,
A purple canopy was spread,
Which gently with the breezes play'd,
And shed around a soften'd shade.
Upon his downy smiling cheek,
Adorned with many a "dimple sleek,"
Beam'd glowing health and tender blisses,
His coral lip...
