August Franzen
Le Marche aux Fleurs de Notre Dame

Born in Norrkoping, Sweden, August Franzen lived much of his life in New York. He was primarily a portrait painter and garnered considerable success as such. He was Paris-trained having studied with Dagnan-Bouveret there, and, upon arriving in New York, became quite a fixture in the local art scene. He was an Academician at the National Academy of Design, where he exhibited regularly, and was also a member of the Society of American Artists, the Century Club, and the Lotus Club (all in New York). He was a prize winner at several major international exhibitions around the turn of the century including the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago; the Paris Exposition of 1900; and the 1901 Pan American Exposition in Buffalo. His work is currently represented in several important public collections including the Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio; National Gallery, Washington, D.C.; Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut; and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York.
