This very large, superb California landscape was painted by an artist celebrated for his California and Pacific Northwest scenes, and well-known among collectors of these works. Frederick Schafer (bio below) emigrated from Germany to the U.S. in 1876 at the age of 37. He traveled widely through the west and captured dramatic nature scenes such as this one, depicting the Upper Sacramento river with its towering trees. His paintings are in many superb institutional and private collections around the world. Paintings by Schafer in this size range have brought from $15,000 to $26,000 recently at auction, which is wholesale pricing (see photos) so we feel ours is a fair price. The painting measures an impressive 65" x 44.5" in its ornate gold wooden frame; the canvas size is 50" x 30". Artist Biography
Léon de Smet studied, as did his brother Gustaaf, at the Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Ghent, where his mentor was Jean Joseph Delvin. Although he lived in Laethem-St-Martin between 1906 and 1913, he was not a member of the Laethem Expressionist group, being primarily influenced by Impressionism. He became a member of the Luminist Life and Light ( Vie et Lumière) Group alongside Theo van Rysselberghe. In 1914, while his brother Gustaaf was in self-imposed exile in the Netherlands after the outbreak of World War I, Léon de Smet moved to Germany. He returned to Brussels after the war and finally settled in Deurle in 1926.

It was probably during an excursion in the countryside near Avignon that Claude-Joseph Vernet executed this drawing, enhanced with pen and brown ink, depicting a mansion on a hilltop overlooking a small village with geometric shapes.
1. Joseph Vernet, a painter influenced by Italy
Claude-Joseph Vernet was born in Avignon in 1714, the son of Antoine Vernet (1689-1753), an artisan painter of architectural decorations, coach panels, and the like. He moved to the studio of Philippe Sauvan (1697-1792), a leading history painter in Avignon, and then worked with Jacques Viali (active 1681-1745), a decorative, landscape, and marine painter in Aix-en-Provence. Vernet's first recorded paintings were decorative overdoors executed in 1731 in the Aix townhouse of the marquise de Simiane. In 1734, Joseph de Seytres, marquis de Caumont, a leading amateur in Avignon, sponsored Vernet to make a study trip to Italy to complete his artistic education and to draw antiquities for his patron.
As Avignon was a papal territory in Vernet's day, he also had a number of useful introductions among influential churchmen when he arrived in Rome. Vernet was soon at home in the French community there, and he was encouraged by Nicolas Vleughels (1668-1737), director of the Académie de France in Rome, even though the young painter had no official affiliation with the royal institution. It could be argued that cave walls were the canvases for the world’s first landscape paintings, which depict and elevate natural scenery through art, but there is a richer history to consider.
The Netherlands was home to landscapes as a major theme in painting as early as the 1500s, and ink-on-silk paintings in China featured mountains and large bodies of water as far back as the third century. Greeks created vast wall paintings that depicted landscapes and grandiose garden scenes, while in the late 15th century and early 16th century, landscapes were increasingly the subject of watercolor works by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Fra Bartolomeo.
The popularity of religious paintings eventually declined altogether, and by the early 19th century, painters of classical landscapes took to painting out-of-doors (plein-air painting). Paintings of natural scenery were increasingly realistic but romanticized too. Into the 20th century, landscapes remained a major theme for many artists, and while the term “landscape painting” may call to mind images of lush, grassy fields and open seascapes, the genre is characterized by more variety, colors and diverse styles than you may think. Painters working in the photorealist style of landscape painting, for example, seek to create works so lifelike that you may confuse their paint for camera pixels. But if you’re shopping for art to outfit an important room, the work needs to be something with a bit of gravitas (and the right frame is important, too).
Adding a landscape painting to your home can introduce peace and serenity within the confines of your own space. (Some may think of it as an aspirational window of sorts rather than a canvas.) Abstract landscape paintings by the likes of Korean painter Seungyoon Choi or Georgia-based artist Katherine Sandoz, on the other hand, bring pops of color and movement into a room. These landscapes refuse to serve as a background. Elsewhere, Adam Straus’s technology-inspired paintings highlight how our extreme involvement with our devices has removed us from the glory of the world around us. Influenced by modern life and steeped in social commentary, Straus’s landscape paintings make us see our surroundings anew.
