About

Photographer Terry O’Neill, by then already known as a world class photographer whose images of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and David Bowie were considered iconic, was on-hand to capture every moment of this legendary performance. O’Neill was given unprecedented access to document the occasion all leading up to the ultimate moment of Elton John on-stage in a Bob Mackie designed Dodger’s uniform – complete with ‘Elton #1’ emblazoned on the back, raising a baseball bat high in the air. It was a home run. On October 25 and 26, 1975, Elton John – the world’s biggest pop star – performed two sold-out shows in California’s Dodger Stadium. It would be the largest rock concert of its time, over 100,000 people (including Elton’s parents, relatives, office workers, and neighbours…all flown in from the UK for the week on a chartered jet) and the first time a music act performed at the ballpark since The Beatles in 1966. In 1975, Elton John released Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, the first ever album to debut straight at number one on the Billboard charts. A few days before the concert, he’d release another number one album, Rock of the Westies. His fame was at an all-time high and Elton John was well-known for his outlandish live performances. O’Neill explains that in order to fully appreciate the historic impact of this performance today, people “ have to remember – in October 1975, no one was bigger than Elton John. He was like Elvis at the height of his career.” The biggest rock star in the world was going to stage two nights in one of America’s most beloved and famous venues. This was sure to become a significant note in the history of 20th-century music. However according to O’Neill “It is impossible to try to explain to people today what it was like – numerous number one albums, touring non-stop, recording non-stop, media, press, television…he was everywhere. Elton still is one of the most talented people I’ve ever met and he gave his all at those concerts.” Elton John opened the concert dressed in a blinged-out white Dodger’s Uniform and derby hat. Underneath he wore a blue short-sleeve shirt adorned with silver studs that, along with his rhinestone-encrusted glasses, sparkled in the California sunshine. Performing some of his most notable songs like Your Song, Rocket Man, Bennie and The Jets, Elton John ended his set by paying homage to the Beatles with his renditions of “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” and “I Saw Her Standing There.” Sir Elton Hercules John CBE is an English singer, pianist, and composer. He has worked with lyricist Bernie Taupin as his songwriting partner since 1967; they have collaborated on more than 30 albums. John has sold more than 300 million records, making him one of the best-selling music artists in the world. His unique blend of pop and rock styles transformed him into one of the biggest music icons of the 20th Century. Some of his most famous hits include “Crocodile Rock,” “Your Song,” “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” and his tribute to Princess Diana “Candle in the Wind” which he performed at her funeral in 1997. John also achieved success in musical films and theater, composing the music for The Lion King and it’s stage adaption, Aida and Billy Elliot the Musical. He’s recieved numerous awards for his work and contribution to music and culture, including five Grammy Awards, five Brit Awards, an Acadamy Award, a Golden Globe, a Tiny award, a Disney Legends Award and finally the Kennedy Center Honors in 2004. In 1994 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998 for “services to music and charitable services.” Limited edition signed and numbered.
