The MoMA Library
Located in Surfside, FL
This piece is part of an ongoing project entitled "Fragmentary Views" (2001 - Present) by Xiaoze Xie, which is a series of paint-compositions based upon photographs of found newspaper piles. For Xie, stacks of printed pages represent not only cultural memory and the passage of time, but the ways in which history is interpreted and recorded according to various belief systems and political agendas. This is a lithograph, signed, dated 2006, and numbered 28/30 The artist continues his ongoing series of works, Fragmentary Views (2001 to present), which explores the vulnerability and fragmentary nature of historical memory, and the general and superficial perception of world events in the age of ready global media. The paintings depict stacked newspapers where only bits of information are visible-a greater understanding is implicit, but just out of view. "What interests me most is the temporary nature of this mundane object loaded with all-encompassing information of changing daily life: from the front-page news to stock market columns to birth announcements and obituaries. Newspapers are recycled. Life goes on." - Xiaoze Xie In the compressed stacks of newspapers, viewers will notice partial images of fragile life in Baghdad, distraught looks of disbelief of suicide attack victims, the building site of the World Trade Center, campaigns against Fa Lung Gong, and, more recent events that are closer to home. The gravity of these events is muffled as it is embedded in the mundane scroll of daily life. Xiaoze Xie immigrated from the People's Republic of China in 1992, where he was born and studied art and architecture. He has MFA degrees from Beijing and North Texas University, and taught at Bucknell University before assuming his post as Professor of Art at Stanford. His works are in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and distinguished private collections. Solo Exhibitions Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, AZ Dallas Visual Art Center, TX Modern Chinese Art Foundation, Gent, Belgium Charles Cowles Gallery, New York Gallery Paule Anglim, San Francisco Nicholas Metivier Gallery, Toronto China Art Archives and Warehouse, Beijing Gaain Gallery, Seoul Devin Borden Hiram Butler Gallery, Houston, TX He has participated in numerous group exhibitions including Shu: Reinventing Books in Contemporary Chinese Art at the China Institute Gallery in New York and Seattle Asian Art Museum, and the traveling exhibition Regeneration: Contemporary Chinese Art from China...

Abstract Color Field Gradient Monoprint Aquatint Etching California Minimalism
Located in Surfside, FL
"Voices XII" Aquatint Etching • Monoprint Image: 12”x 14” • Paper: 30”x 22” • 2001 Hand signed and numbered 1/1 on BFK Rives paper. Joe Novak (1930-2019) California Contemporary Minimalist. His work is about the exploration of color and light through abstraction, with tonal gradations that infuse them with a meditative quality. During the eighties and nineties, he painted large monochromatic color field canvases with tonal gradations and soft edges that infuse them with a meditative quality and a sense of movement. When illuminated they become glowing surfaces of color and light. His artistic background and work link him closely with the first generation abstract expressionists of the New York School. Major influences include Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, and his mentors, Peter Busa and Esteban Vicente, whom he met and befriended during the eighties while living and painting in East Hampton. During the nineties, while living and working in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Novak initiated a project called "Light Emanations", in which he created digital computerized programs of changing light levels and configurations on a selection of his large paintings, dramatically illustrating the effect of light changes on color perception. Novak's body of work is extensive and include painting on canvas, panel and paper as well as monotypes, drawings, assemblages, mixed media and prints. He has often worked in series, focusing on a particular medium for years. Among these are "Meditations" (color pencil drawings), "Voices" and "Voices 2" (color aquatint etchings), "Echoes" (painting assemblage with minerals) and "Colors" (350 miniature panel paintings). In recent years his paintings have become more gestural, often with musical allusions. His work bears a relationship to the Light & Space Movement and Minimalism artists James Turrell, Larry Bell, Craig Kauffman, Billy Al Bengston, Peter Alexander, Laddie John Dill, Lita Albuquerque. these are also anticipative of the aquatint etching works by Anish Kapoor. Color Gradient, Abstract Art, Land Art. During the eighties and nineties, he painted large monochromatic color field canvases with tonal gradations and soft edges that infuse them with a meditative quality and a sense of movement. When illuminated they become glowing surfaces of color and light. Critic Christopher Knight wrote, Novak is an unabashed Color Field painter. His paintings and aquatints at Bert Green Fine Arts — the Santa Fe artist's third show there — feature works that will call to mind abstractions as diverse as those by Helen Frankenthaler, Mark Rothko and Morris Louis and the landscape abstractions of Joe Goode. Novak's work is in many public and private collections, including numerous museum collections. He spent his last years living in Palm Springs. Selected Group Exhibitions Bert Green Fine Art, Chicago, Illinois "Joe Novak/Huck Lewis-Bennett: A Collaboration", Stephen Archdeacon Gallery, Palm Springs Melissa Morgan Fine Art, Palm Desert, California "Cutting Edge", Zane Bennett Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico "Non Objectivity", Pharmaka Gallery, Los Angeles, California Farrell Fischoff Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico Eagle Gallery, London, England EVO Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico Jill George Gallery, London, England Bert Green Fine Art, Los Angeles, California "Site Unseen 3", James Kelly...

A Moving Still Life, from The Blue Guitar
Located in Palo Alto, CA
David Hockney A Moving Still Life, from The Blue Guitar, 1976-1977 is a playful scene that takes its title to the full extent of its literal meaning. The center of the composition is dominated by a mannequin-like head and a table with a typical still-life arrangement, set on the surface of a large table suggested by the shading and edge lines in the bottom right. The hair of the mannequin blows out behind it, threading neatly through a mysterious red hoop...

This is a 19th century colored aquatint and stipple engraving finished by hand entitled "Silver Rock Melon", drawn and engraved by George Brookshaw and published in London in 1812 as plate 67 in his 'Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits'. It depicts a Silver Rock Melon still on the vine, but the melon lies on a heater green mat. A wedge of the melon has been dissected to reveal its inner anatomy, including the seeds. The melon skin is a heather and light green color, while the inner portions are a light peach color. The vine and leaves are shown attractive shades of light green and there are soft yellow flowers. The plant is displayed on a light brown textured background with shadows to impart 3-dimensionality. The scene is reminiscent of an engraving in an 18th century artistically stylized human anatomy atlas. There are wide white margins. The title and inscription lies within the lower border. This striking engraving is presented in a reddish brown decorative wood frame with a darker brown scroll-work outer trim and a gold-colored inner fillet and a thick heather green mat. The frame measures 25.75" high, 21.5" wide and 1.13" deep. It is glazed with UV conservation glass. There is a short thin vertical line of discoloration in the lower margin through the word "melon" and a tiny spot in the upper margin on the left. The print and frame are otherwise in excellent condition. There is a second Brookshaw engraving that is framed in identical moulding, although a slightly different size and a different color mat. t depicts a cluster of grapes. The two prints would make a striking display pairing...

A technique named for its resemblance to watercolor or ink wash, aquatint is often combined with etching to create rich tonal variations. It’s a similar process to etching but the resin ground is more granulated, so the acid handles the metal differently.

Different degrees of darkness are created during the aquatint printmaking process based on the amount of time the plate is in contact with the acid. The process was famously deployed by Goya, but contemporary artists, ranging from Wayne Thiebaud and Susan Rothenberg to Joel Shapiro and Marcel Dzama have used it to dramatic effect.

And prints — as well as sculpture, photography and and other types of art — should help a residence feel more like itself. “Art plays such an important function in the home,” says Sophie Ashby, who founded her eponymous interior design studio in London in 2014. “Out of everything in a space, it has the most power.”
