Silver Rock Melon: A Framed 19th C. Color Engraving by George Brookshaw
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a 19th century colored aquatint and stipple engraving finished by hand entitled "Silver Rock Melon", drawn and engraved by George Brookshaw and published in London in 1812 as plate 67 in his 'Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits'. It depicts a Silver Rock Melon still on the vine, but the melon lies on a heater green mat. A wedge of the melon has been dissected to reveal its inner anatomy, including the seeds. The melon skin is a heather and light green color, while the inner portions are a light peach color. The vine and leaves are shown attractive shades of light green and there are soft yellow flowers. The plant is displayed on a light brown textured background with shadows to impart 3-dimensionality. The scene is reminiscent of an engraving in an 18th century artistically stylized human anatomy atlas. There are wide white margins. The title and inscription lies within the lower border. This striking engraving is presented in a reddish brown decorative wood frame with a darker brown scroll-work outer trim and a gold-colored inner fillet and a thick heather green mat. The frame measures 25.75" high, 21.5" wide and 1.13" deep. It is glazed with UV conservation glass. There is a short thin vertical line of discoloration in the lower margin through the word "melon" and a tiny spot in the upper margin on the left. The print and frame are otherwise in excellent condition. There is a second Brookshaw engraving that is framed in identical moulding, although a slightly different size and a different color mat. t depicts a cluster of grapes. The two prints would make a striking display pairing...

Large Aquatint Etching A Red Color MInimalist Abstract Etching Robert Mangold
Located in Surfside, FL
A Red, from Three Aquatints, 1979 Aquatint on six copper plates printed on Rives BFK paper Paper Size: 40 3/4 x 40 3/4 inches (103.5 x 103.5 cm); Image Size: 33 x 33 inches (83.8 x 83.8 cm) Signed and titled lower left front Edition of 50, 10 AP, 3 TP Published by Parasol Press, New York Printed by Hidekatsu Takada, assisted by David Kelso, Crown Point Press, Oakland, California Robert Mangold (born October 12, 1937) is an American minimalist artist. He is also father of film director and screenwriter James Mangold. Mangold first trained at the Cleveland Institute of Art from 1956-59, and then at Yale University, New Haven, (BFA, 1961; MFA, 1963). In 1961 he married Sylvia Plimack, and they moved to New York. In the summer of 1962 Mangold was hired as guard at the Museum of Modern Art. Mangold's work challenges the typical connotations of what a painting is or could be, and his works often appear as objects rather than images. Elements refer often to architectural elements or have the feeling architecture to them. He almost always works in extensive series, often carried through both paintings and lithograph works on paper. Mangold’s early work consisted largely of monochromatic free-standing constructions. In 1968 he began employing acrylic instead of oil painting, rolling rather than spraying it on Masonite or plywood grounds. Within the year, he moved from these more industrially oriented supports to canvas. In 1970 he began working with shaped canvases and within the year began brushing rather than spraying paint onto canvas. Mangold made his first prints in 1972 at Crown Point Press and has made prints throughout his career, working with Pace Editions and Brooke Alexander Editions. In 1965, the Jewish Museum in New York held the first major exhibition of what was called Minimal art (Minimalism) and included Robert Mangold. In 1967, he won a National Endowment for the Arts grant and in 1969, a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 1971, he had his first solo museum exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum. Major museum exhibitions of his work have since been held the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (1974), the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (1982), Hallen für Neue Kunst in Schaffhausen (1993), and Musée d’Orsay in Paris (2006). He has been featured in the Whitney Biennial four times, in 1979, 1983, 1985, and 2004. His work is related to Geometric Abstraction. Don Fink (1923-2010) was a well known and well listed Abstract Expressionist who studied at the Art Students League and the Academie Julian. He was born in Duluth , Minnesota, but later moved to Europe where he established himself as an artist. Photogenic, by Yuji Hiratsuka
Located in Palm Springs, CA
Signed, titled, and numbered from the edition of 15. Image of a young girl with a bird perched on her head while someone takes her photo. While the images have some resemblance to traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e prints, their sense of whimsy, satire and irony relate more closely to contemporary life and western sensibilities. Young women and their relationships to shoes, food, and fashion provide much of Hiratsuka’s subject matter. Another group of his prints focus on landscape, flowers, and floral patterns. Hiratsuka’s graphic work has been exhibited in the Americas, Europe and Asia. He has received numerous awards in international competitions. During the last four years he has had 14 solo shows in the United States, and international solo shows in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, Munich, Germany and Geneva, Switzerland. Partial list of public collections: The British Museum, UK Tokyo Central Museum, Japan Panstwowe Museum, Poland The House of Humor and Satire, Bulgaria Cincinnati Art Museum, OH Jundt Art Museum, WA The Portland Art...

Buying art and design is one thing. Collecting it is quite another. Whether you’re looking to add a focal point to your living room or you’re introducing a new acquisition to an already thriving collection of art, the range of aquatints and other fine art prints on 1stDibs is waiting for you.

A technique named for its resemblance to watercolor or ink wash, aquatint is often combined with etching to create rich tonal variations. It’s a similar process to etching but the resin ground is more granulated, so the acid handles the metal differently.

Different degrees of darkness are created during the aquatint printmaking process based on the amount of time the plate is in contact with the acid. The process was famously deployed by Goya, but contemporary artists, ranging from Wayne Thiebaud and Susan Rothenberg to Joel Shapiro and Marcel Dzama have used it to dramatic effect.

And prints — as well as sculpture, photography and and other types of art — should help a residence feel more like itself. “Art plays such an important function in the home,” says Sophie Ashby, who founded her eponymous interior design studio in London in 2014. “Out of everything in a space, it has the most power.”

Find original aquatint prints and other prints and paintings for your home on 1stDibs.
