Self Check-Out - Several Self Portraits in the Chaos of a Big Box Store, Framed
Located in Chicago, IL
-ARTIST STATEMENT- I depict my person in multiplicity with different selves representing dramatis personae. My likeness is both implicit and symbolic in the portrayal of my narrative; the drama involved in creating art and the artist’s role in society. I use realism to invite the viewer into mysterious inner worlds that are layered reflections of the outer. Dehumanizing environments are imbued with art historical references as a critique of power structures. The artist is an Everyman who is at odds with society and his self. Visually my work is a celebration of society’s dark undercurrents and its overlooked absurdities. I use charcoal and printmaking media as their tenebrous values add a fitting metaphor. The nuances of light and shadow seduce viewers into a world their better judgment would have them avoid. This provokes a sense of disquietude that causes viewers to assess our world through the austerity of a colorless, yet not humorless, light. -BIO- Christopher Ganz grew up in Northeast Ohio and from early on had a fertile imagination and an interest in art. Christopher's artistic education truly began at the University of Missouri, where his love of the human form led to many figure drawing classes and his exposure to the wonders of printmaking. Christopher's then went onto graduate school at Indiana University and a summer abroad program in Italy was a dream realized. Christopher then grasped charcoal with a renewed vigor and large, sfumato-laden drawings ensued. Christopher's artistic influences are many; from a seminal exposure to Dore's engravings of the Divine Comedy, to Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Goya, and up to Lucian Freud, Mark Tansey...

Woman Spinner and a Shepherd with Flock /// Sheep Lady Antique Landscape Animal
By Francesco Londonio
Located in Saint Augustine, FL
Artist: Francesco Londonio (Italian, 1723-1783) Title: "Woman Spinner and a Shepherd with Flock" *Signed and dated by Londonio in the plate (printed signature) upper right Year: 1759 (first state of two) Medium: Original Etching on blue wove handmade paper Limited edition: Unknown Printer: Unknown Publisher: Likely the artist Londonio himself Reference: Scola No. 13 Sheet size: 7.25" x 5.5" Image size: 6.75" x 5.25" Condition: Presently archivally tipped into a storage mat. Some light foxmarks to sheet. Minor crease across the two sheeps' heads. It is otherwise a strong impression in very good condition Very rare Notes: The plate number "12" printed upper right in margin. "Sammlung Hämmer (Hammer Collection)" inkstamp in green on verso lower center. Biography: Francesco Londonio (Milan, 1723 – Milan, 1783) was an Italian painter, engraver, and scenographer, active mainly in Milan in a late-Baroque or Rococo style. Londonio trained as a painter under Ferdinando Porta and Giovanni Battista Sassi in Milan, but traveled to Rome and Naples. He studied engraving with Benigno Bossi. He is best known for his paintings and ectchings of rustic and pastoral landscapes and subjects, with both animals and peasants playing a dominating role over the landscape. This focus on genre themes was popular among the wealthy patrons of the time, specially in Northern Italy; and artists such as the Brescian painters Ceruti and Cifrondi worked with such themes. In his engravings, he recalls Gaetano Zompini. Londonio is also known for his scenography. An example, of this poorly conserved art form that still exists is a nativity scene on cut wooden shapes for the church of San Marco in Milan. The effect is a cheaper version of the naturalistic Sacri Monti scenes, which had been painted stucco statuary. It also can be seen as a cross between the holy scenes described above, and the theatrical set pieces, for example, those needed for the newly founded La Scala theater. The work at San Marco prompted Empress Maria Theresa of Austria...

Shopping for Intaglio Prints?

There are many good reasons for an art lover to venture into the world of intaglio prints and other types of fine art prints. For one, art is a smart investment if the print-collecting bug has bitten you. But maybe you’re merely looking to bring art into your home — if so, prints and other art can help enhance your space while supporting your effort to tie an interior design together.

Making a print can be as straightforward as pressing one painted surface to another or as complex as triggering a chemical reaction to create an image. Intaglio is a broad term for the variety of techniques used to create images by incising a metal plate, either with a sharp instrument (engraving, drypoint and mezzotint) or with acid (etching, aquatint and photogravure).

In intaglio printmaking, after the artist incises the image, the plate is covered with ink then wiped clean, leaving pigment only in the marks that have been made on the plate. The plate is then covered with a piece of damp paper and run through a press to transfer the ink. Different intaglio techniques are often combined to create varying effects of line and tone.

OK, so what is the difference between a woodcut print and an intaglio print?

“It is the opposite of relief printingwoodcut, linoleum cut, letterpress, and rubber or metal stamping,” says Rhea Fontaine of Paulson Fontaine Press. “With relief printing, the raised areas of the printing surface are inked and printed, while the areas that have been cut away do not pick up the ink. Often these prints are made by hand.”
