Frans de Geetere Art

1895-1968

Frans de Geetere was born François Joseph Jean de Geetere in Oudergem, a suburb of Brussels. De Geetere studied at the Beaux-Arts in Brussels but rebelled against the academic teaching there. With his partner, the painter May den Engelsen, De Geetere sailed a barge from Brussels to Paris, where they moored by the Quai de Conti by the Pont Neuf and lived a Bohemian lifestyle. De Geetere and den Engelsen were intimate with Harry and Caresse Crosby in the late 1920s. Harry wrote to his mother, “If two people can be in love with two people then we are in love with them.” Harry Crosby shot himself after the Wall Street Crash in 1929. De Geetere had an exhibition the following year at the Galerie de la Plume d’Or, introduced by the art critic André Warnod. But that was, essentially the end of his career. The chief influence on De Geetere’s work was the Belgian Symbolists, particularly Fernand Khnopff. The etchings of De Geetere are sombre and disquieting, infused with a miasma of conflicted sexuality and existential dread. His art now feels very modern, resonating, for instance, with both that of Paula Rego and that of Jake and Dinos Chapman. In his lifetime De Geetere fell so far out of favor that he titled a volume of lightly-fictionalized memoirs, self-published from his barge the Marie-Jeanne, L’homme qui oublia de mourir – The man who forgot to die.

View of Dunoon on the Clyde
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Scottish artist Robert Carrick (1829-1904) is renowned for his landscape and figurative paintings in oil and watercolor. This painting features detailed drawings of figures in the foreground with wagon, and the town and scenery in the background, painted over in watercolor in rich raw umber and red-brown tones in the foreground and blue green tones in the background. Carrick showed promise at a young age, exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy age 16. He was a member of the Royal Institute. This two-toned watercolor work has detailed figures, wagon with hay in the forefront above a view of Dunoon town near Glasgow as it was long ago. Signed by the artist, lower left with an inscription that reads: 'View of Dunoon, Argyllshire drawn by Robert Carrick, Glasgow, for David Allan'. Verso includes a copy of the same inscription. Saltire Gallerie replaced the cracked and dirty plain glass with art glass and added an acid-free paper behind the work. While doing this work we found an art giclee, included with the painting. Presented in a patterned wooden frame with art glass. Dunoon was a thriving town on the river at the time of this work, and later became part of Glasgow. The view from above the town is a popular one, as Saltire Gallerie has another view of Dunoon from above by Scottish artist Patrick Downie...

Newbury Street, Boston [Louis Boston / Bonwit Teller Building]
Located in Boston, MA
This watercolor by Charles Demetropoulos depicts a classical French Academic-style building which was designed in 1862 by architect William G. Preston as the new home of the Boston Society for Natural History, which had been founded in 1830. In the 1860’s, many of Boston’s cultural institutions relocated here to the Back Bay, the elegant residential district being built on the tidal marshes behind the city. When the museum moved here in 1863, the new building dominated the western edge of the landfill. The classical design reflected its role as a “temple of learning.” The building was later renovated into a women’s retail store known as Bonwit Teller and later became home to Louis Boston...
