Josselin Bodley Drawings and Watercolor Paintings
1893-1974
Josselin Bodley is a British artist, born from an important family. His father was the historical John Eduard Courtenay (JEC) Bodley, and his sister was Ava Anderson, Viscountess Waverley. After travelling much and studying in Eaton, Bodley arrived in Paris to become a painter and started his artistic career, though after taking part in the war. His artistic style was influenced by the experiences of these years. His first works, indeed, show French architectures, landscapes and war images. Stylistically, his work is a combination of tradition, modernity and realism. He was also considered one of the most promising artists of his generation, a painter between French avantgarde and English artistic autonomy. His style kept distant from the trends of important emerging artistic groups in Great Britain of the 1930s. Bodley’s works were exhibited at the four most important art galleries of the West, the Bernheim Jeune in Paris, the Leicester Galleries in London, the Marie Harriman Gallery in New York and the Alfred Flechtheim in Berlin.

Son of Alfredo Opisso y Viñas, journalist, historian and critic, and of Antonia Sala y Gil, his sister Regina Opisso, was also a writer. He comes from an enlightened family full of artists. His paternal grandfather was Josep Opisso y Roig, journalist and director of the Diari de Tarragona, father of the also writers Antonia Opisso y Viña and Antoni Opisso y Viña. His maternal great-grandfather was the painter Pere Pau Montaña, his maternal grandfather the fabulist Felipe Jacinto Sala and his maternal uncle, the painter Emilio Sala y Francés. His nephew was Arturo Llorens y Opisso, a writer better known under his pseudonym Arturo Llopis.
Although he was born in Tarragona, his family moved to Barcelona when Opisso was only two years old. In modernist Barcelona at the end of the 19th century, Opisso worked as an assistant to Antonio Gaudí in the works of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona since 1892. This work was intentionally torn and mended. It predates the artist's full immersion, years later into torn and re-pasted collages, using ripped previous drawings and paper-based materials from media.
