Arts and Crafts Animal Sculptures
ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE
Emerging in reaction to industrialization and mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated handcrafted design as a part of daily life. The history of Arts and Crafts furniture has roots in 1860s England with an emphasis on natural motifs and simple flourishes like mosaics and carvings. This work is characterized by plain construction that showcases the hand of the artisan.
The earliest American Arts and Crafts furniture dates back to the start of the 20th century. Designers working in this style in the United States initially looked to ideas put forth by The Craftsman, a magazine published by Wisconsin native Gustav Stickley, a furniture maker and founder of the Craftsman style. Stickley’s furniture was practical and largely free of ornament. His Craftsman style drew on French Art Nouveau as well as the work he encountered on his travels in England. There, the leading designers of the Arts and Crafts movement included William Morris, who revived historical techniques such as embroidery and printed fabrics in his furnishings, and Charles Voysey, whose minimal approach was in contrast to the ornamentation favored in the Victorian era.
American Arts and Crafts work would come to involve a range of influences unified by an elevation of traditional craftsmanship. The furniture was often built from sturdy woods like oak and mahogany while featuring details such as inlaid metal, tooled leather and ceramic tiles. The style in the United States was led by Stickley, whose clean-lined chairs and benches showcased the grain of the wood, and furniture maker Charles Rohlfs, who was informed by international influences like East Asian and French Art Nouveau design.
Hubs in America included several utopian communities such as Rose Valley in Pennsylvania and the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony in New York, where craftspeople made furniture that prioritized function over any decoration. Their work would influence designers and architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, who built some of the most elegant and iconic structures in the United States and likewise embraced a thoughtful use of materials in his furniture.

When we find an antique that is this good in terms of its design AND in terms of the quality of the workmanship then the first thing we do is to look for a signature. And we were really (and pleasantly) surprised to find the signature of MJ Slager in the far right, bottom corner. Only once before have we seen and owned and sold another stunning antique by this highly skilled artist. And when you realize that there have never been any other pieces of this artist available on the internet anywhere (apart from the stunning folding screen that we sold via 1stdibs and that you can see in image 19 of this listing) then you will understand how special it was for us that this coat rack by MJ Slager too landed on our path. Thinking of the odds of this happening, we can only describe it as a blessing. Like we described in that previous listing: when you look at the beauty, the detail and the overal workmanship it is unbelievable that such a skilled artist did not go on and have a bigger career. As more often has been the case here in Holland, maybe the first world war had something to do with it.

Depicting a stoutly modeled elephant on an integral plinth with a blanket draped across its back and an Indian headdress or harness across its forehead.
Decorated in white, blue, and green glazes on a terracotta body and with inset beads or pearls to the elephant's head and forehead.
Cornwell was a student of Kenyon Cox, Arthur Dow, and Augustus Saint Gaudens at the Art League in New York City at the end of the 19th Century. She was subsequently an assistant to St. Gaudens for a decade and a half on his Shaw Memorial in Boston.
All in all, simply a wonderful, unique sculpture from one of America's important female sculptors of the early 20th Century!

Some chances you only get once in your lifetime and that is exactly what we thought when we first saw this marvelous Arts and Crafts era pendant. The six hand carved arms are like stems of flowers growing out of the base of this chandelier and the perfect (both design and condition-wise) alabaster shades are like stylized blooming flowers. Just like the six mint arms, the monumental and mint circular 'base' too is all hand-crafted and hand carved out of soilid oak and with a stunning row of large oak beads between the top and bottom section. Together with the equally unique and also handcrafted, original 'rope-chains' they are just some of the elements that make this antique extraordinary and truly a joy to own and to look at. However, to us, it is the remarkable and mint condition, hand carved owl sculpture in the middle of this chandelier that takes it to the next level. A rare and important pair of stoneware grotesque amphibious creature andirons by Robert Wallace Martin for Martin Brothers dating from the mid 1870’s. The heavily made andirons portray two grotesque amphibious creatures crouching on their hind limbs and bound back to back by a blue band. The creatures stand on a large rectangular stepped plinth base and are decorated in shades of ochre and blue, one slightly darker glazed than the other. Both have incised makers marks the edge of the plinth bases.
