Big Hand Cast Bronze Bell Bold with a most pleasant resonating sound
Beautiful resonating ring tones await the new owner of this big one-of-a-kind vintage bronze bell from old Japan. Its beautiful natural patina makes it an attractive and desirable work of art. This distinctive dragon headed bell called ryuzu and remarkable protrusions called chi chi or nyu are crafted by generations old skilled Japanese specialists to improve sound resonance and are unique to Japan's ancient traditions.
This vintage hand cast bronze temple bell dates to the middle Showa period, mid-20th century.
A scarce survivor, this rugged bell was gently used.
Please note its impressive cast dragon headed top ryuzu, thick walls and original blue gray toned patina.
Dimensions: 18 inches tall and 10 inches diameter. It has been used and possesses an original aged patina appropriate to its age-just the way we like to find them.

About Bonsho Bells "Voice of Buddha"
The earliest bells date to around 600 AD, although the general design is of much earlier Chinese origin and shares some of the features seen in ancient Chinese bells. Their penetrating and pervasive tone carries over considerable distances. The sound of the bell is thought to have supernatural properties. Fluent in five languages and having in the course of business travelled to more than forty countries, Mark is well-known to museums and art-collectors around the world for his long career and his interesting and diverse collection of rare ethnographic material.
Mark knows the origin and symbolism of each piece. Through extensive research and more than ninety trips around the globe, Mark familiarised himself with the traditions of the various cultures he visited in order to understand the meaning of each object to its region and tribe. His home has a specialist library and several rooms are filled with tribal carvings, textiles and ethnographica.
He acquired his first tribal piece in 1948 during a business trip to Milne Bay, New Guinea, and has since documented the acquisition of some 35,000 items. 15thC Sri Lankan Divided Kingdom Period Standing Bronze Buddha. Looks to have a high silver content in the alloy based on the sheen of the surface and the softness of the surface. Quite rare to find a figure from this period in this large size and high quality--the vast majority are the later Kandy style, which look similar but have rounder faces and distinctive ripples covering the robes. If you search the internet you will find very few of this type outside of museums or high end auction houses that are not just a few inches tall and quite provincial in casting.
