Four Knoll Eero Saarinen Swivel Tulip Armchairs
Located in Baltimore, MD
Classic mid-century modern set of four tulip swivel, armchairs, side, dining chairs, for Knoll designed by Eero Saarinen (USA). Features molded white lacquered fiberglass form resting on cast aluminum swivel base with original knoll removable seat cushions. Genuine Knoll chairs and retains the ‘Knoll Associates sticker (320 Park Ave.) and Knoll Associates Inc’ label attached under cushion and stamped BR 50. to the underside of the chair. An elegant and iconic design with its distinctive tulip shape. This time-honored example of mid-century modern design can be incorporated into virtually any decorating style for additional seating in any room of your home or office effortlessly. The stickers applied to Knoll furniture pieces are helpful in determining the date and authenticity of a particular piece. In the late ‘40s and early ‘50s Knoll occupied showrooms on Madison Avenue. After 1961 Knoll’s offices were located at 320 Park Ave., and in 1970 they moved to 745 Fifth Ave. The logo on this set identifies the chairs for the time period after 1961. Measurements: 32 1/2? Tall X 27? Wide X 24? Deep (arm 25" tall) (seat 18" tall ) About Florence Knoll (Designer) Architect, furniture designer, interior designer, entrepreneur — Florence Knoll had a subtle but profound influence on the course of mid-century American modernism. Dedicated to functionality and organization, and never flamboyant, Knoll shaped the ethos of the post-war business world with her polished, efficient design and skillfully realized office plans. Knoll had perhaps the most thorough design education of any of her peers. Florence Schust was orphaned at age 12, and her guardian sent her to Kingswood, a girl’s boarding school that is part of the Cranbrook Educational Community in suburban Detroit. Her interest in design brought her to the attention of Eliel Saarinen, the Finnish architect and head of the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Saarinen and his wife took the talented child under their wing, and she became close to their son, the future architect Eero Saarinen. While a student at the Academy, Florence befriended artist-designer Harry Bertoia and Charles and Ray Eames. Later, she studied under three of the Bauhaus masters who emigrated to the United States. She worked as an apprentice in the Boston architectural offices of Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer; Ludwig Mies van der Rohe taught her at the Illinois Institute of Technology. In 1941, she met Hans Knoll, whose eponymous furniture company was just getting off the ground. They married in 1946, and her design sense and his business skills soon made Knoll Inc. a leading firm in its field. Florence signed up the younger Saarinen as a designer, and would develop pieces by Bertoia, Mies and the artist Isamu Noguchi. Her main work came as head of the Knoll Planning Group...

1st Generation '657' Armchairs by Charles Pollock for Knoll Associates, Signed
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Incredible 1st Generation (original production of this design between 1964 and 1968) collectors examples of the classic Charles Pollock Armchairs (Model 657) for Knoll Associates, signed with Knoll Associates sticker label and paper label (see photos). This pair has beautiful cognac orange color with light attractive age and patina to the leather which adds greater dimension and texture to the leather. Secondly, and most importantly, these labeled with original Knoll Associates tags which date these towards the early few years of production before Knoll Associates changed hands to Knoll International. This pair which was produced between 1964 and 1968 are ideal for a collector who wants the 'original' production examples made when Knoll first introduced this design in 1964. And considering the condition of these - this pair won't last long so buy it while it is still available! These leather sling armchairs perfectly blend comfort, functionality, and style. The frame comprises polished chrome steel tubing with cast aluminum, creating a sleek and subtly contrasting profile. The seat is a heavy cognac orange cowhide suspended on the frame which has been carefully shaped to form the back and seat sling. The thick cognac orange leather contrasts beautifully with the black arms, black leather seat pads and black seat supports attached to the chrome frames. Under the sling-seats are the original Knoll Associates manufacturing stickers which identify these from being in their earlier (original) production runs of this design. The leather has an attractive light patina in excellent vintage conditions. Both chairs present very well, are ideal collectors examples and are ready for immediate use. Here is a quote from Charles Pollock speaking to the design of this chair taken from Knoll's website: “I was penniless, didn’t have a car and I was making my prototypes out of plumbing that I pulled out of an old, abandoned basement. I brought all these prototypes in [to Knoll] without an appointment and pushed them off the elevator and said, ‘I want to see Florence Knoll.’ Fortunately for me, [Senior Designer] Vincent Cafiero came out just by accident, and he said, ‘Who are you?’ I said, ‘I’m Charles Pollock.’ I had had a major article in Interiors, in a series of articles about Saarinen, Eames, and myself about three or four months before, and he had read that…. So Cafiero said, “Look, this stuff is interesting. Why don’t you take this idea and throw this other idea into it?” Eventually, between Vincent Cafiero and myself, I developed a quarter-inch scale model of a chair that was very, very similar to…the 657 chair...

1st Generation '657' Armchairs by Charles Pollock for Knoll Associates, Signed
Located in Los Angeles, CA
If you are seeking a pair of the classic Charles Pollock Armchairs (Model 657), these are the ones you want and here is why: First, the color combination is in our opinion, the best - while the black on black and brown on black are great as well, the classic cognac orange sling with black cushion is definitely the stand-out icon of the family. This pair has beautiful color with attractive patina to the leather which adds greater dimension and texture to the leather. Shop Unique Furniture on 1stDibs

When it comes to shopping for vintage, new and antique furniture — whether you’re finally moving into that long-coveted loft apartment, ranch-style home, townhouse or furnishing your weekend house on the lake — you should think of your home as a stage for the seating, tables, lighting, storage cabinets and other pieces that best match your personality.

Coziness, comfort and creating a welcoming space are among the important things to consider when buying furniture, whether that means seeking strict cohesion or rooms characterized by a mix-and-match assembly of varying shapes, colors and materials. And for those who now work from home, exercise, eat and relax within the same four walls every day, they’ll also want to think about flexibility and an innovative approach.

Have you built your dream kitchen?

Is your current living-room furniture all that it could be?

Does your toast-worthy bar or vintage bar cart exude equal parts class and cheeriness?

And importantly, is your home officebackyard or otherwise — a happy one, regardless of the design style you happen to gravitate toward?

Although mid-century modern, rustic, minimalist, Art Deco and contemporary looks remain popular, they aren’t the only styles available to design connoisseurs.

Furniture styles are nothing if not fluid, meaning what’s popular one year may not be the next. That’s why it’s crucial to not only pay attention to interior-design trends but also focus on the styles that speak to you. That way, you (and your interior designer, if that is in the plans) can work to create a home that’s entirely your own, complete with impressively modern decor as well as an array of history’s universally renowned iconic designs.

It’s difficult to single out well-recognized designs from what is a crowded pantheon of celebrated and seminal furnishings. Certain outstanding designs have such stellar quality they’ve endured for decades as bona fide cultural treasures, still being manufactured, in many cases, by the same venerable companies that shepherded them into being (think Herman Miller, Knoll and Fritz Hansen). Some works come immediately to mind as contenders for any short list. When you’re discussing the most popular mid-century modern chairs, for example, no tally would be complete without citing designs by Arne Jacobsen, Charlotte Perriand, Charles and Ray Eames and Hans Wegner.

Good furniture, be it authentic vintage furniture or new & custom furniture, allows you to comfortably sit and tell your favorite stories. Great furniture tells a story of its own.

On 1stDibs, find everything from sofas to serveware to credenzas to coffee tables, and every other type of antique, vintage and new furniture you need to create a singular space that you’ll be proud to call home.
