Biography
Auguste Jules Alphonse Jouant was born in Paris, Cité Fénelon, in the 9th arrondissement, on June 19, 18632, son of Étienne Alphonse Jouant, carpenter, and Louise Carré.
A student of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris3, Jules Jouant was one of Auguste Rodin's practitioners. He exhibited the Bust of Prince Gedroyc at the Salon of 1883 and sculpted busts of musicians such as Richard Wagner, Frédéric Chopin or Ludwig van Beethoven. He obtained an honorable mention at the Salon of 1913.
Jules Jouant is renowned for his works of art (vases, dishes, lamp bases, pitchers, candlesticks, table bells, trinket bowls, etc.) typical of the Art Nouveau style, produced in pewter by the Barbedienne founders This link leads to a disambiguation page, Eugène Blot and Ettlinger Frères. Classically trained in Italy at the Beaux Arts Academy in Rome from 1906 to 1913, Edgardo Simone became a famous sculptor in Italy and the United States using mediums of terracotta, ceramic, bronze, and plaster. He earned a Doctorate of Design and Sculpture at the Academy and then emigrated to the United States where he worked in New York, Chicago and southern California.
His style was influenced by Art Nouveau, Art Deco and other modernist influences. In Italy he had received three times the Croix de Guerre and was decorated by King Victor Emmanuel II and Queen Margherita. Before moving to America, he had much recognition in Italy. He had created war, funeral and city monuments in twenty-six Italian cities. When he arrived in New York City, one of the newspapers carried a headline: "Italy's greatest Sculptor Arrives in New York."
In New York, Simone became prominent in society and did many portrait busts including of Thomas Edison, John J. Pershing, Henry Ford and Louis Brandeis...

With artful and sensuous handling of material, Emile Jacob demonstrates his life-long love of learning with a technical mastery of porcelain and glazes as well as an awareness of current artistic trends such as Japonisme and l’Art Nouveau. From a bird’s-eye view perspective popularized by Japanese wood block prints circulating in Europe, Jacob immediately confronts the viewer with the sea. The variegated blues and greens take on every murky depth, every iridescence produced on a sun-filled water’s surface; while the suggestion of movement created by undulating patterns of water morphs into sand ridges caused by breaking waves as the viewer nears for a closer examination. The effect is remarkable. Upon closer scrutiny, the abstracted ridges create an affect of being even farther away from the sea, as if high in flight. The same captivating qualities are achieved by the opaque and crystalline glazes to suggest the interior of an oyster’s shell. The ultimate pearl, a female nude, is voluptuously modeled; fusing as one with her seascape, her hair spreads out in wavy tendrils and her graceful, long fingers wrap around the plaque’s edge.
