Chinese Drip Glaze Fish Pond, c. 1850
Located in Chicago, IL
Originally used for pickling food, this large earthenware jar was sculpted in China's Shanxi province nearly two centuries ago, shaped by hand with grand scale and wabi-sabi texture. The monumental vessel is cloaked inside and out with a beautiful drip glaze that lingers on every imperfection, streaming down the sides with rich color ranging from warm brown to cool black. Subtle ridges and indentations throughout suggest the jar was fashioned by coiling flattened ropes of clay and then tapped with a paddle to achieve a faceted texture. The interior is repeatedly stamped with a pattern suggestive of rippling water, encouraging the glaze to flow and drip with irregular movement and color variance. The rounded rim is left unglazed, the raw earthenware texture set in contrast to the glossy finish of the sides. Today, the monumental pot...

Pair of Cast Iron Warwick Vases
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
A very finely cast pair of cast iron models of the renowned Warwick Vase circa 1870. While the original Warwick Vase is a colossal 6ft high, these replicas are scale at just 40cm tall, bringing prestige to an interior placed on a console, column or sideboard. Unusually, each vase has an original, removable enamelled cast iron liner. True to the antique original, these cast iron vases features an egg and dart moulded rim above male and female masks among torches, vine leaves, berries and scrolls in high relief between distinct entwined handles. Each stand on a socle above a plain pedestal base. The original Warwick Vase, often closely associated with the Albani Vase...

Antique Sèvres Style Porcelain and Gilt Bronze Vase with Marine Subject
Located in London, GB
This beautiful vase was created in France, in the period when Napoleon III was Emperor (1852-1870). It is designed in the style of Sèvres Manufactory porcelain. Sèvres goods are often beautifully hand painted with pastoral and mythological scenes, and marine subjects. These tended to be set within finely parcel gilt and jewelled frames, offset against turquoise ‘bleu celeste’ or navy 'bleu Sèvres' grounds. The porcelain vase is of classical Amphora form, with a slender elongated neck, a large ovoid body with a slightly waisted base, and a splayed foot. The vase is topped by a porcelain crown, which is navy coloured and decorated with gilding, porcelain ‘jewels’ and a gilt bronze (ormolu) pinecone finial. The navy vase...

Early Japanese Satsuma Antique Vase
Located in Atlanta, GA
An Satsuma ceramic stone ware vase, circa 19th century, around the end of the Edo and the beginning of Meiji period. In the form of a Classic garlic bottle whose prototype was from China, the white bodied piece is decorated with an early form of kin nishikide, the so called golden brocade, a palette of iron-red, blue, green, yellow, purple and black with golden highlight. The over glazed enamel paint shows a group of robed figures in a garden setting with a lion and three tigers. A transparent overall glaze shows very fine crackles. The design is relatively sparse with plenty of negative space in contrast to the Satsuma production from the late 19th century, when the trend became fussy and overly glitz, due to the influence by the perceived western taste for the export market. This piece may still be made for export but its pattern was more influenced by both Kyoto Pottery and the Kano school of painting compared to the export ware by the end of the 19th century onward to the early 20th century. It was believed by many that this was a result of Satsuma potters visiting Kyoto in the late seventeenth century to learn over glaze painting techniques. There are some age glaze crackles especially around the foot. The piece is not signed in keeping with the earlier production before Satsuma ceramics...
