Taisho Period Noh Mask
A decorative antique lacquered gilt and painted papier mache' Noh mask made in Japan early in the 20th Century. Performers would wear these masks while participating in traditional Japanese entertainment that bares some slight similarity to western opera. This came from the collection of a noted California artist and was highly regarded by him. I believe the character depicted is meant to represent a foreigner. The custom steel stand is later. The mask is slightly over life size.
