STACKED Small Ostrich Clustered Pendant Lights by Richard Haining, Custom

About

The shape of this clustered seven piece pendant cluster is reminiscent of ostrich eggs. Each shade is hand-built. Stacked piece by piece, 1/4" layer by 1/4" layer to create the form. Once complete, the exterior of the surface is shaped using a variety of hand held tools (no turning involved), resulting in a finely honed finish with slight undulations, similar to that of hand-built ceramics. The ash here has been ebonized, while the unshaped interior has been flash gilded, adding a warm gold reflective quality and highlighting the terraced contours. This pendant is suspended from the canopy plate using cotton covered cord and hosts a standard phenolic candelabra E16 base. The shade is available in a variety of wood species, finishes and sizes. Additionally, Richard can custom design a new form tailoring it to perfectly compliment your space and needs, be it a sconce, floor lamp, or chandelier. Note, the last image shows the Medium Pendant alongside the Small Pendant. UL listed components Please note, the measurements listed below are representative of a single individual pendant. This item is also customizable with respect to the wood choice as well as the overall dimensions.

About The Maker

Richard Haining

View Profile
Richard Haining is a Brooklyn-based studio furniture maker and artist. Raised in Atlanta and educated at the Rhode Island School of Design, he is committed to responsible design that is elegantly hand-crafted with a modern sensibility. Blurring the line between function and fine art, Richard works with designers, trade professionals, and residential clients alike; custom tailoring each piece to suit each client’s specific needs. Whether creating a decorative vase, a custom cabinet, or executing a client's design, Richard’s meticulous attention to detail results in finished pieces that are both utilitarian and beautiful. Much of his current work is directly influenced by the over-abundance of waste and scrap wood being discarded around him. He finds beauty in the knots, century-old nail holes, mineral stains, and other “defects” that are part of that tree’s history, a fingerprint of time since passed, a natural beauty to be celebrated. These locally salvaged remnants became the building blocks for his ‘Stacked’ collection of decorative vessels and furniture pieces. The one of a kind patterns created by the tiny stacked wooden pieces achieve a quality reminiscent of mosaic tile work, basketry, and ceramics. In a world that tends to shun manual labor, Richard finds pure joy in the art of working with his hands. The ritual of creating each individual piece is a very gratifying experience for him, and it is his wish that the recipients of his work experience the same delight.
