About the Item

Early example of Kaare Klints iconic "Church" chair designed in 1936 and manufactured by Fritz Hansen, Copenhagen. This beautifully worn piece retains the original papercord seat and the patina to the woodwork is stunning. The church chair was initially designed for Bethlehem Church in 1936. However, it is in Grundtvig's church with the chairs that cemented the chair's iconic status. Bethlehem and Grundtvig's churches were designed by renowned architect Peder Vilhelm Jensen Klint, Kaare Klint's father. After Jensen Klint died in 1930, Kaare Klint completed the construction of both churches. Kaare Klint, recognized as the father of modern Danish furniture design, helped establish the furniture design department at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1924. As a lecturer and later professor, Klint taught many of Denmark's future famous designers such as Børge Mogensen, Arne Jacobsen, Poul Kjærholm and Ole Wanscher.
