Francois Carre Oval-Back Garden Chair - a Pair
Located in Evans, GA
Seldom seen Francois Carre oval back armchair! This particular installment in the Carre line combines the exquisite sunburst pattern in a larger size. The superb comfort of the Carre line certainly is inherent in this version. All seat/back springs are solid, with no cracks or fractures. Our experience shows that the seat/back springs are the weakest area of any Carre chair, but these are in good condition. Vintage Metal Rockers...

Marta Blomstedt Sheepskin Wing Chairs for the Aulanko Hotel, Finland, 1930s.
Located in ŁÓDŹ, PL
Pair of Marta Blomstedt Sheepskin Armchairs for the Hotel Aulanko, Finland, 1930s. In 1936, architects Matti Lampen and Märta Blomstedt were commissioned to design the Aulanko Hotel in Hämeenlinna, Finland. This hotel was in its time a luxury hotel of international relevance. Here Finnish functionalist elegance was conveyed at its best. The armchairs in the hotel's entrance hall are today the subject of varying questions among design experts. There are claims that the prototype of the model made for the Aulanko Hotel was Fleming Lassen's "Tired Man" armchair from 1935. "Aulanko" itself became known all over the world. Most notable is the voluminous body that stands on four bun-shaped feet. While this model originally had tubular steel legs, today there are many variations of this chair, such as a 1941 model with wooden legs. Available in abundance in Finland, wood was used by many furniture makers as a substitute for metal, which was banned for furniture during the war. Until the late 1940s, Artek marketed a version of the armchair with round wooden legs. In the 1950s, similar but smaller models were produced by different manufacturers, including Kantosen Puutyö. This craze explains the appearance of many variations with slight differences. Armchairs are very comfortable and impressive. Through their streamlined and round shapes, they literally invite the user to sit in them and check if they are as comfortable and cozy as they look. For upholstery, we used the highest quality, premium sheepskin, which, apart from being very pleasant to the touch and cozy, is also durable. Furthermore, the warm brown colour of the wooden feet nicely contrasts to the soft, light color of the upholstery, creating a cosy look, not to mention that wooden bun feet make a long-lasting, rock solid foundation for any chair. * Price per piece, Euro 35 000 per set of 2 Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The armchairs are newly refinished and reupholstered in premium sheepskin. At the customer's special request, AMS Gallery offers a re-upholstery service in a fabric of choice. We guarantee the originality and authenticity of each of our items. The process of renovation and reupholstering is performed by experienced craftsmen with great attention to originality. Our team makes sure that each element retains its value and is ready for many years. Dimensions: Width 100 cm / 39.37 in. Depth 95 cm / 37.4 in. Height 90 cm / 35.4 in. Seat Height 40 cm / 15.7 in. About the Designer: Märta Blomstedt (1899–1982) was an architect and one of the driving forces of the Finnish functionalism...

Märta Blomstedt, Lounge Chair In Blue And White, 1939
Located in Helsinki, FI
One of the 20 original chairs made for the iconic Aulanko Hotel in Hämeenlinna by Märta Blomstedt. To emphasize, this chair was acquired from the son of a previous employee of the hotel and has the tubular steel legs that were only made for the hotel chairs. The chair had the fabric used in the hotel in the 1990s, under which the chair partially had the original blue upholstery from the 1930s. This chair was reupholstered with matching high quality fabric as the original one on the original pine structure. The tubular legs were only cleaned and retain original patina. The chair was made by cabinetmaker Arvo Laine. Of the Hotel furniture, the "Aulanko chairs" were the only ones designed for the hotel and specifically for the cigar room. The reason why Blomstedt took it upon herself to only design the drawing room chair is unclear, but if anything, it shows the importance she gave the space and the thought of bringing people together for memorable moments in a cozy atmosphere beside the fireplace. One legend has it, that she designed the chair with the steel tubular legs as a tribute to her late husband and one of the driving forces behind the functionalism movement Architect Pauli Blomstedt...

Antique and Vintage Lounge Chairs for Sale: Wassily Chairs, Eames Chairs and Other Celebrated Seats

While this specific seating is known to all for its comfort and familiar form, the history of how your favorite antique or vintage lounge chair came to be is slightly more ambiguous.

Although there are rare armchairs dating back as far as the 17th century, some believe that the origins of the first official “lounge chair” are tied to Hungarian modernist designer-architect Marcel Breuer. Sure, Breuer wasn’t exactly reinventing the wheel when he introduced the Wassily lounge chair in 1925, but his seat was indeed revolutionary for its integration of bent tubular steel.

Officially, a lounge chair is simply defined as a “comfortable armchair,” which allows for the shape and material of the furnishings to be extremely diverse. Whether or not chaise longues make the cut for this category is a matter of frequent debate.

The Eames lounge chair, on the other hand, has come to define somewhat of a universal perception of what a lounge chair can be. Introduced in 1956, the Eames lounger (and its partner in cozy, the ottoman) quickly became staples in television shows, prestigious office buildings and sumptuous living rooms. Venerable American mid-century modern designers Charles and Ray Eames intended for it to be the peak of luxury, which they knew meant taking furniture to the next level of style and comfort. Their chair inspired many modern interpretations of the lounge — as well as numerous copies.

On 1stDibs, find a broad range of unique lounge chairs that includes everything from antique Victorian-era seating to vintage mid-century modern lounge chairs by craftspersons such as Hans Wegner to contemporary choices from today’s innovative designers.
