Post-Modern Lounge Chairs

POSTMODERN STYLE

Postmodern design was a short-lived movement that manifested itself chiefly in Italy and the United States in the early 1980s. The characteristics of vintage postmodern furniture and other postmodern objects and decor for the home included loud-patterned, usually plastic surfaces; strange proportions, vibrant colors and weird angles; and a vague-at-best relationship between form and function.

ORIGINS OF POSTMODERN FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Emerges during the 1960s; popularity explodes during the ’80s
  • A reaction to prevailing conventions of modernism by mainly American architects
  • Architect Robert Venturi critiques modern architecture in his Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture (1966)
  • Theorist Charles Jencks, who championed architecture filled with allusions and cultural references, writes The Language of Post-Modern Architecture (1977)
  • Italian design collective the Memphis Group, also known as Memphis Milano, meets for the first time (1980)
  • Memphis collective debuts more than 50 objects and furnishings at Salone del Milano (1981)
  • Interest in style declines, minimalism gains steam

CHARACTERISTICS OF POSTMODERN FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Dizzying graphic patterns and an emphasis on loud, off-the-wall colors
  • Use of plastic and laminates, glass, metal and marble; lacquered and painted wood
  • Unconventional proportions and abundant ornamentation
  • Playful nods to Art Deco and Pop art

POSTMODERN FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE POSTMODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Critics derided postmodern design as a grandstanding bid for attention and nothing of consequence. Decades later, the fact that postmodernism still has the power to provoke thoughts, along with other reactions, proves they were not entirely correct.

Postmodern design began as an architectural critique. Starting in the 1960s, a small cadre of mainly American architects began to argue that modernism, once high-minded and even noble in its goals, had become stale, stagnant and blandly corporate. Later, in Milan, a cohort of creators led by Ettore Sottsass and Alessandro Mendinia onetime mentor to Sottsass and a key figure in the Italian Radical movement — brought the discussion to bear on design.

Sottsass, an industrial designer, philosopher and provocateur, gathered a core group of young designers into a collective in 1980 they called Memphis. Members of the Memphis Group,  which would come to include Martine Bedin, Michael Graves, Marco Zanini, Shiro Kuramata, Michele de Lucchi and Matteo Thun, saw design as a means of communication, and they wanted it to shout. That it did: The first Memphis collection appeared in 1981 in Milan and broke all the modernist taboos, embracing irony, kitsch, wild ornamentation and bad taste.

Memphis works remain icons of postmodernism: the Sottsass Casablanca bookcase, with its leopard-print plastic veneer; de Lucchi’s First chair, which has been described as having the look of an electronics component; Martine Bedin’s Super lamp: a pull-toy puppy on a power-cord leash. Even though it preceded the Memphis Group’s formal launch, Sottsass’s iconic Ultrafragola mirror — in its conspicuously curved plastic shell with radical pops of pink neon — proves striking in any space and embodies many of the collective’s postmodern ideals.

After the initial Memphis show caused an uproar, the postmodern movement within furniture and interior design quickly took off in America. (Memphis fell out of fashion when the Reagan era gave way to cool 1990’s minimalism.) The architect Robert Venturi had by then already begun a series of plywood chairs for Knoll Inc., with beefy, exaggerated silhouettes of traditional styles such as Queen Anne and Chippendale. In 1982, the new firm Swid Powell enlisted a group of top American architects, including Frank Gehry, Richard Meier, Stanley Tigerman and Venturi to create postmodern tableware in silver, ceramic and glass.

On 1stDibs, the vintage postmodern furniture collection includes chairs, coffee tables, sofas, decorative objects, table lamps and more.

OBJ-02 Steel Lounge Chair by Manu Bano
Located in Geneve, CH
OBJ-02 steel lounge chair by Manu Bano. Dimensions: 100 L X 60 W X 60 H cm. Material: Steel. OBJ-02 is a low chair composed of a repetition of brass tubes. Each one is cut in half and bent independently, creating the back, seat and legs. The brass is preserved unsealed and with all the defects of its manufacture and handling. Also, when bending the tube halves, the tube must be heated and this creates the darker visible parts of the chair. Over time the entire chair will age and change its appearance. Manu bañó was born in valencia, spain in 1990. After studying industrial design at uch ceu university in valencia and a master’s degree in furniture and lighting, he joined magnus long studio in london and collaborated in projects for central saint martins university. Then he moved to mexico city in 2013 where he currently lives and works. His work has been exhibited in design fairs such as design Miami/ Basel, salone satellite in Milan, Maison & Objet in Paris and zona maco in Mexico, and has also been honored with awards such as best of year by interior design magazine, a design award and if design award. Son of a designer and an artist, manu grew up in a creative and experimental environment, awakening from an early age his interest in materials, craft techniques and the nature of objects. Together with héctor esrawe and age salajoe...

'Bounty' Leather Club Chair by L. Davanzati for The Pace Collection, 1980s
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A lovely example of the 'Bounty' series club chair by The Pace Collection in the early 1980s, this deep seated channel-tufted leather lounge chair was designed by L. Davantazi produced by Elam and retailed by The Pace Collection. Perfect for a cigar, whiskey or wine lounge or any space that can use something a bit modern yet still refined and classy. *Note, we have the matching loveseat / settee and three-seat sofa in another listing. Last two photos show the entire set. See our other listings or contact us for more details if you wish to create a living room or office / hotel lobby set. This channel-tufted leather club chair retains its original supple leather upholstery in an intriguing deep burgundy-brown color, almost like dark-cognac with beautiful lightly aged leather patina. The sumptuous seats are encased in a dark colored lacquer, providing an attractive modern contrast with the rich and elegant leather. This lounge chair has casters for ease of relocation according to occasion and mood or to better suit a view. The back is finished with tufted leather making this easy chair look incredible when floating in a room with the back exposed. Curved Art Deco styled arms lend 1980s juxtaposition and character to any room. Similar in style to the Saratoga chair...

Soft Cream Arch Lounge Oak Chair Upholstered in Dedar/Artemidor by Mazo Design
Located in Geneve, CH
Soft Cream Arch Lounge Oak Chair Upholstered in Dedar/Artemidor by Mazo Design Dimensions: W 69 x D 79 x H 76 cm Materials: Oak, Sheepskin With the new ARCH collection, mazo forges new paths with their forward-looking modernism. The series is a tribute to the renowned Danish designer and Architect Magnus Læssøe Stephensen (1903-1984). ARCH originates from a basic study of forms and embodies a mixture of lightness and weight as contrasts in discreet interaction with each other; straight sculptural lines are flanked by the curves of the armrest, an embodiment of the ‘midcentury’ functionalism. Mazo produce and re-launch both the iconic international design classics, and the hidden gems that have only been produced in a small number in this design universe. We are serious about authenticity. We rely on it, as it is the core of our existence. Humbled to be trusted with the exclusive rights to manufacture and launch furniture...
