About the Item

This exemplary Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller 'Tandem' seating system was designed in 1962, originally for Chicago O'Hare airport and then adopted by many other airports and commercial seating projects. We restored this two-seat 'Tandem' by taking it apart completely then buffing and polishing the aluminum frame. Then reupholstered with very-high-end Edelman 'Shagreen' leather, padding and support components are integrated into the new seats, backs and armpads. We originally acquired a large quantity of Tandem benches from Chicago O'Hare airport when they remodeled. Some of the seating we acquired appears to be from the original 1962 installation and others from later years as they expanded. One important thing to note is that many dealers will sell their unrestored Tandem seating as possessing black leather slings, when in-fact they are heat pressed vinyl. Our restored example is upgraded with leather, but it is important to know that they were originally made with vinyl and it is very difficult to create custom leather panels with the stitched pattern - we had to go through many attempts to learn how to get it just right which we finally did and you can see in the results just how beautiful it looks. Edelman leather is already very expensive, one of the most expensive and quality leathers in the world. 'Shagreen' leather is a specialty leather collection from Edelman that is much more expensive than their other leathers. The upgrades to this settee are incredible - opulence, style, and vintage collectibility all in one piece. This Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller circa 1962 'Tandem' loveseat would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Post-Modern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. CONDITION: Completely restored. Aluminum frames were buffed and polished. Seating slings were reupholstered with Edelman 'Shagreen' leather, in doing so we added additional support and padding inside the slings to provide greater comfort and stability.
