Mare - hunting horse by Josuë Dupon 1864-1935
Located in Gent, VOV
A beautiful large bronze sculpture of a proud standing mare. Old sand cast created during the artist Josuë Dupon's lifetime. Josuë Dupon (also Josué or Josue Dupon) was a Flemish sculptor and engraver. His work also includes painting and graphics. He received his training through evening classes at the academy of Roeselare and Antwerp (1884) and later at the National Institute of Fine Arts (1887). In 1891, he won a gold medal with the monumental sculpture group Samson kills the lion and was runner-up in the Prix de Rome for sculpture. From that year on, his work appeared regularly in exhibitions at home and abroad. His reputation was such, that he became one of a select group of sculptors allowed by King Leopold II to carve statues in Ivory, which was imported from the Congo, the Belgian colony. In 1893 his exceptionally refined ivory statue of Diana was bought by the Antwerp Royal Museum of Fine Arts, which also acquired his spectacular bronze Vulture defending its prey a year later. Working in every genre and mastering every technique and material, Josuë Dupon became best known as a sculptor of exotic animals. He was equally capable of faithfully expressing anatomical detail as of rendering the animals' nature. Josuë Dupon was a technically faultless realist, with a sense of the dramatic, a feeling for decorative complexity and a tendency towards idealizing. The placement of his camel driver and two bronze groups at the entrance to Antwerp Zoo confirmed this reputation as animalier. The career that Dupon subsequently built, brought him numerous important awards and an appointment as professor at the Antwerp Academy, a tenure he held between 1905 and 1934. Besides animals, he sculpted busts, war memorials and public monuments. For one of the largest sculptural monuments and the largest fountain in the city of Buenos Aires, called Monument of the Two Congresses, he collaborated with his good friend, the Belgian sculptor Jules Lagae. Josuë Dupon created several statues of mighty condors for this monument. At the start of his career his conception of art was strongly influenced by traditional 19th century artistic ideals. After the turn of the century his compositions and surface treatment changed and became more modern. He met Rembrandt Bugatti around 1905 or 1906 in the 'Jardin des Plantes' in Paris and invited him to Antwerp. Bugatti began travelling to Antwerp in 1906 to observe and sculpt the inhabitants of its zoo, which was then considered the best in the world, and Dupon allowed Bugatti to stay with him during several of his early visits. As such Dupon became a friend and a bit of a father figure to Rembrandt Bugatti. Dupon did not play a very active part in artistic movements or associations. Dupon remains an important sculptor not only through his body of work but also because of the influence he exercised through interactions and collaboration with other sculptors such as Lagae, Bugatti and Bourdelle but also because he trained leading sculptors such as Albéric Collin (1886-1962), Willy Kreitz...

Artist Statement on “Empty Landscapes” series: In the life of the artist, sport fields and arenas have been a refuge and a home. Empty Landscapes is a project that started during the pandemic which explores the football field as a place de-peopled. Among other things we never imagined happening in our lifetime, this space built into our landscapes to be occupied became for nearly a year and a half a space inaccessible- even prohibited. By placing the field vertically, deconstructing it, or rearranging the boundaries and shapes that lay down the foundations of the game the artist creates a familiar, but obsolete representation of a space treasured by so many. Woman on the Rocks I
Located in New York, NY
Isca Greenfield-Sanders Woman on the Rocks I, 2016 Mixed media oil on canvas 35 x 35 inches 88.9 x 88.9 cm Signed, titled and dated (verso) -- Greenfield-Sanders’ landscape paintings invite the viewer into nostalgia, to forge a connection to their own experience. Using found vintage photography as a starting point, she creates several iterations of each image, which she alters with pencil and watercolor, and finally paints over with oil. They emerge simultaneously familiar yet enigmatic. She elaborates, stating, “All of my paintings are based on amateur slides from seventy years ago. I am interested in the ‘comfortably familiar’ nature of the images and how the elapsed time allows them to ‘prickle with new meaning’ to connect that which was worth capturing with that which is worth painting, at present.” The paintings require a great deal of forethought and groundwork, but still appear unlabored and fresh. Her style of painting, which prizes color, representation and evocation, is activated by both individual experience and collective memory. Isca Greenfield-Sanders (b. in 1978 in New York City) received her dual BFA and BA degree from Brown University. The artist lives and works in New York, NY. Recent solo exhibitions include “The Things I Can’t Forget,” Miles McEnery Gallery, New York, NY; “Ocean Eyes of Blue,” Michael Reid...

Papillion -Limited Edition Giclée print on Archival Cotton Paper, Abstract, 2018
Located in Bal Harbour, FL
Papillion, 2018 Giclée print on Archival Cotton Paper. Acid and Lignin-free. The painting is a limited edition Giclée print, created using high-quality archival cotton paper, ensuring its longevity and preserving the intricate details of the artwork. The central image of the composition features a butterfly, but instead of traditional organic patterns, it is formed by a captivating arrangement of geometric figures. The butterfly serves as the focal point of the painting, capturing the viewer's attention with its bold and vibrant colors. Shades of fuchsia, blue, orange, green, white, black, yellow, and light blue interplay harmoniously, creating a visually striking and energetic composition. Upon closer inspection, one can discern that the butterfly's wings are constructed using a meticulous arrangement of various geometric shapes. As the viewer's gaze explores the painting, they may notice that within the composition, there are additional elements arranged in the form of eyes. These eyes, composed of circles of varying sizes and triangles, lend an intriguing depth and surreal quality to the artwork. They evoke a sense of introspection and invite contemplation about the interplay of perception and reality. Papillion, 2018 Giclée print on Archival Cotton Paper. A Chinese Procession Ornament dating from the Liao Dynasty, from 907 to 1125 AD. The Liao Dynasty, also known as the Khitan Empire, was an empire in northern China that ruled over the regions of Manchuria, Mongolia, and parts of northern China proper. It was founded by the Yelu family of the Khitan people in the final years of the Tang Dynasty, even though its first ruler, Yelu Abaoji, did not declare an era name until 916. The Liao Empire was destroyed by the Jurchen of the Jin Dynasty in 1125. However, remnants of its people led by Yelu Dashi established the Xi (or Western) Liao Dynasty 1125 - 1220, also known as Kara - Khitan Khanate, which survived until the arrival of Genghis Khan...

Halo presents an amazing cast of historical black figures, most of whom were legendary and mythic characters in their time, but have been nearly lost to the vagaries and biases of history as seen through a white lens. With Halo, Greenfield brings the stories of Black folk-saints, martyrs, freedom-fighters, survivors, magicians, and visionaries back into view. Many of the figures are from the 1400-1800s, a timeframe that corresponds with Europeans beginning to use racial distinction as a tool to justify slavery. Greenfield honors their simultaneously disturbing and astounding lives by bestowing them with halos, traditionally seen as reverential symbols of adoration and respect. “I am reimagining what a saint is,” Greenfield says. “Maybe in studying their stories, they can inform us on better ways to live.” Thought to have been a descendent of central African royalty...

It’s closely interconnected with the social customs and habits, the aesthetic taste and the opinion of value. The Twelve animals of Year represent the traditional Chinese wisdom that the laws of Nature governs all things and that man must seek harmony with Nature. I created this Series of twelve zodiac animals made of gold and pottery, trying to give the “zodiac”-this long-standing cultural symbols a meaning of the prosperity and the luckiness. –He Wenjue About the artist: He Wenjue was born in 1970 in Hunan Province, China. Photography, Drawings, Prints, Sculptures and Paintings for Sale

Whether growing your current fine art collection or taking the first steps on that journey, you will find an extensive range of original photography, drawings, prints, sculptures, paintings and more on 1stDibs.

Visual art is among the oldest forms of expression, and it has been evolving for centuries. Beautiful objects can provide a window to the past or insight into our current time. Art collecting enhances daily life through the presence of meaningful work. It displays an appreciation for culture, whether a print by Elizabeth Catlett channeling social change or a narrative quilt by Faith Ringgold.

Contemporary art has lured more initiates to collecting than almost any other category, with notable artists including Yayoi Kusama, Marc Chagall, Kehinde Wiley and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Navigating the waiting lists for the next Marlene Dumas, Jeff Koons or Jasper Johns has become competitive.

When you’re living with art, particularly as people more often work from home and enjoy their spaces, it’s important to choose art that resonates with you. While the richness of art with its many movements, styles and histories can be overwhelming, the key is to identify what is appealing and inspiring. Artwork can play with the surrounding color of a room, creating a layered approach. The dynamic shapes and sizes of sculptures can set different moods, such as a bronze by Miguel Guía on a mantel or an Alexander Calder mobile suspended over a table. A wall of art can evoke emotions in an interior while showing off your tastes and interests. A salon-style wall mixing eclectic pieces like landscape paintings with charcoal drawings is a unique way to transform a space and show off a collection.

For art meditating on the subconscious, investigate Surrealists like Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. Explore Pop art and its leading artists such as Andy Warhol, Rosalyn Drexler and Keith Haring for bright and bold colors. Not only did these artists question art itself, but also how we perceive society. Similarly, 20th-century photography and abstract painting reconsidered the intent of art.

Abstract Expressionists like Helen Frankenthaler and Lee Krasner and Color Field artists including Sam Gilliam broke from conventional ideas of painting, while Op artists such as Yaacov Agam embraced visual trickery and kinetic movement. Novel visuals are also integral to contemporary work influenced by street art, such as sculptures and prints by KAWS.

Realist portraiture is a global tradition reflecting on what makes us human. This is reflected in the work of Slim Aarons, an American photographer whose images are at once candid and polished and appeared in Holiday magazine and elsewhere. Innovative artists Mickalene Thomas and Kerry James Marshall are now offering new perspectives on the form.

Collecting art is a rewarding, lifelong pursuit that can help connect you with the creative ways historic, modern and contemporary artists have engaged with the world. For more tips on piecing together an art collection, see our guide to buying and displaying art.

A variety of authentic art is available on 1stDibs. Explore art at auction and the 1stDibs NFT art marketplace, too.
